Where do you get your fasteners from...

I'm looking to get a 5/16 flanged nut - but the flanged portion is more like a fender washer in size....well, just short of me stacking washers underneath...

For automotive fasteners, usually Auveco or Rockford. I avoid hardware store fasteners at all costs; even if it means swimming through the salvage yard.

Find your local fastener supplier, sometimes they are under industrial, heavy equipment, farm+ranch, etc... titles.

Best thing you can do, knowledgeable staff typically, higher quality stuff, much better prices. I have found buying simple hardware like 5/16" flanged nuts online will range from overpriced to terrible.

If I need to see it, local hardware stores - City Mill, Ace Hardware, HD or Lowes and if none of these has them then Hawaii Nut and Bolt 20 miles away. If I know what I want then McMaster - Carr online.

If your time is worth anything to you, McMaster Carr is the go to place. They're expensive, but they have it, and it's good quality, they ship quick and shipping is reasonable. It's my go-to place for hard to get or unusual hardware.

I support my local Bolts Plus, big or small they have it all.

I think prior to these guys there was a local place called Brafasco. The kicker with those guys was - $20 minimum order, on in stock stuff. I doubt I was back after hearing that one.

Boltdepot.com if i have a big order. They were the cheapest by far when buying box size amounts.

If buying a handful of stuff ace hardware is my place. The local "industrial" supplier is too far away and a pain to deal with otherwise i would use them since they have everything under the sun.

Do you guys carry assortment packs for the homeowner/DIY types? Like some wood screws, machine screws, bolts/nuts/washers.

I like to stock up and not have to make a trip anywhere if I need a fastener for a project or repair. I usually just buy fasteners at the local supply house by the pound, but it isn't the best quality stuff.

Personally, I'm pretty specific on certain things...ie, about 85-90 of my wood screws is primarily GRK. Some bigger ones are Simpson, etc, etc.

On certain things, like if doing X Y or Z, I'm going to prefer grade X in usa stock. On others, then it's chicom ****...

We don't do assortments, but we do sell most of the stuff in small quantities so you can roll your own pretty easily.

I use McMaster Carr for non-emergency stuff like others have said. Even in an emergency, I tend to use box store stuff until I can order the better thing. They were great about 7yrs ago when I had no idea how to describe the part I needed, sent them an email with a picture and they ID'd it immediately.

Great service and when I had a client site in the King of Prussia, PA area, we got lucky with same day shipping a few times. Most of it was next day.

Fastenal - I try to use made-in-USA Holo-Krome if they have the size.
Mettec - made-in-USA Titanium, the best I have ever used

Monsterbolts - cheap import titanium for non-critical but corrosive environments
Home-depot - for quick non-critical stuff.

Yep- I'm near King of Prussia and if I order before 11am, I get my parts the same day. They call it Lightning Delivery or something like that.

I have never seen a flanged bolt or nut with an oversized head. They are usually about the size of a standard washer.

I have a local non-chain fastener store that I like to deal with. Onlin, I like Albany County Fasteners. Small or large quantities and FREE shipping on orders over $35 !

McMaster Carr. They have top quality and depending on location they have will call and can be picked up same day. Not too long ago you could pick up at will call and pay with cash. No more only credit or debit cards.

Tractor Supply or Blue Collar Supply for "by the pound" general nuts and bolts.

Ace Hardware for unusual stuff (they have an enormous selection)

If I end up getting anything at Home Depot, I go ahead and buy a whole box of it. Much cheaper in the long run.

I got a lot from EMCO, before they went out of business...hardware by the box.

McMaster Carr. If they dont have it, no one will. My orders usually arrive the next day. Ive ordered flange head screws and speed nuts from them to replace the factory special fasteners that I kept breaking on my Honda Accord's bottom cover shield.

Picture from kimballmidwest are deceiving alex71 no disrespect to you or your company, in my opinion it looked like a larger flange.

I might be nutty but nuts are not my expertise.

You are correct. the picture on our website is of a standard serrated flange nut. With fasteners the picture never tells the whole story. The specs are what matters.

We are working on a full redesign now. within a few months it will look pretty different--full dimensional specs on all items, as well as the ability to order in any quantity, instead of pre-made pack qtys.

Boltdepot.com if i have a big order. They were the cheapest by far when buying box size amounts.

Next order over $35, compare them to Albany County Fasteners

These are my two favorite places as well.

The boltdepot.com charts and fastener information is great. I learned a lot about machine bolts from there. All the new hardware on my vise is from there. Customer service is great. Need to know a measurement on one of their fasteners that isn't on their page? Email them and the customer service guy will walk back to the warehouse and measure it.

Albany County Fasteners has a lot of stainless steel and silicon bronze stuff. They must have a lot of boat builder and marine accounts. Just FYI their black oxide stuff is black oxide coated stainless steel. Be sure to use anti-seize with it.

I discovered Albany County Fasteners through reddit. I replaced my toilet tank gasket. The bolts were brass, but the nuts and washers were stainless steel, which rusted. Now it was just surface rush, and only on one side, probably because of the leaking gasket, but I was determined to get all brass or silicon bronze hardware. I asked on reddit and I could't for the life of me find a USS 5/16" washer (not even on McMaster Carr). Since I was cranking down pretty hard onto ceramic, I wanted the wide OD of USS like the stainless steel hardware. Someone from their store found my post and directed me to their site.

My local Tru-Value (http://ww3.truevalue.com/westfieldlumber/Home.aspx) has a decent selection. They use Hillman for consignment. They said they will special order a box of anything Hillman makes, but its a two week wait. Honestly, ask your local hardware store if they special order from whoever they get fasteners from.

I ordered from McMaster Carr once. Definitely the widest selection, and when you need it in a hurry you can't beat the prices for the shipping. I'd love to need something bad enough to drive to Livingston NJ for a pickup order

McMaster Carr. -snip- My orders usually arrive the next day -snip-

You must live next door to their shipping department? Don't get me wrong, I like McMaster Carr and have ordered from them in the past, but I always seem to get "slow boat" shipping speed from them. Ordering from them is my absolute last resort. If I need something quick I will do everything in my power to buy locally. If I need to by from McMaster, then I know my project will be delayed for several days while waiting for the slow boat to arrive. Lol.

However, I will say.... if you need it, they have it! (IF you can wait wait for it)

FWIW I spoke to a new customer today who has been buying stainless from Bolt Depot for about 10 years, according to him. He gave me a few Bolt Depot part numbers to look up. I was stunned at the pricing. At least double ours. Some items three times as much.

I guess SEO pays. I can't believe they are selling anything, but they are driving traffic to their site and making sales, even at these prices..
