father and son school project

Hi guys, my son asked me to help him build a planet ( I will let you guess which one ).

We used an old a/c motor with a gear reducer on it to turn it with an "O" ring.

I cut an 8" float in half and we machined a ring out of lexan.

We put the whole assembly on bronze bearings.

Theres a light in the centre which lights up.

It was a great way to get him interested in making something from scratch.

His grade has yet to be determined.

my gramps took me logging when I was 4 to 6 years old many times when i'd end up staying with them because both my parents worked. he had me on his lap while cutting logging roads in his D9. have you driven on a logging road? well imagine being on about a 45 degree tilt inside a bulldozer that is bigger than some logging trucks. still remember it even though I can't drive one I did learn some RESPECT.

looks like you might have a PROTEGE there and I for one would love to be in his place.

that's pretty cool. I tried to make time to do this kind of stuff with my kids over the years. boy did it pay off.

Actually you can see his grandfathers tool chest beside the lathe he is using.

Congrats on the father/son time together. Nothing I like to see better than a young person learning to run machinery. Also glad to see he is wearing his safety glasses. He gets an A+ in my book. He'll also most likely be one of the cool kids with the project seeing that he has access to machinery to make something like that.
