My father-in-law passed a few years ago and my mother-in-law now wants his tools/parts gone. The trouble is, I have no clue what he has and/or what they're for. If there is anyone in Southern CA that would like to work with me on figuring out what he has and what it's worth, I would find a way to thank you very much.

I look forward to any replies. There are also some large (older) power tools if anyone is interested. I can send pics of some stuff.

What part of SoCal? I'm helping a widow as we speak sell off her husband's woodshop. This is the 2nd one I have appraised and the 3rd I have assisted. The first one is still sitting there as she can't let go yet. What I find is that many people just don't know the terminology. That's a big hurdle.

You can PM me if you wish. Sometimes I work with a retired cop. I don't personally buy or sell the stuff as I think that's a conflict of interest but now and then I will buy something for myself after doing comparables on ebay. So far I haven't charged anything for the work but the tools have been very local.

My mother-in-law lives in Fullerton, near the Brea border. I can take some pictures if everyone thinks it'll help. Some things are obvious like a couple old car horns, a small two stroke engine, a brass piston rod ... stuff like that.

Thank you everyone who wished us welcome.

I'm close by in Whittier, I'll help if I can.

I'm going to be posting some pics soon. If anyone recognizes something, please feel free to let me know. Most stuff isn't in real great shape, but there are a couple "specials" that I'll be showing to the group.

Here are a couple items mom-in-law wants sold that I actually know what they are, but I have no idea as to their value. As far as I know (and my wife knows) everything works fine. There are also some ancillary items that go with each of these items.

Any ideas on values?

Bandsaw, quick sale $200. Small mill in not so good condition, quick sale 500 to 750. With a fair amount of tooling, $750 for sure, if not a little bit more.

Edit: I just noticed the DRO on the mill. If it works that adds a bit. Wendy, if DRO doesn't mean anything to you, it's the servo motor on the table feed and the LCD display near the head. A used machinery dealer will offer you $250 and a haul away. Not everybody can move that thing so the market is limited. Pending seeing it, I'd be in the hunt.

Wow Zeke, that's wonderful information. Thank you. There's a lot of other stuff too, and I'll be posting those pics on a different post. I think I should start something new for these questions.

If anyone wants to come visit these pieces of machinery, please email me at [email protected] ... we'll look forward to meeting you.

BTW ... there's a whole bunch of tooling material.

I'd be interested in the mill if this wasn't SoCal. Looks like the thing took a long good bath, that really messes with the machinery DRO or not. Depending on the mfg, parts may be unobtainable. Probably weighs in at 1200+ lbs. The DRO looks to be and older model Shooting Star (?), so it might be repairable should it not work.

For machines like that and any tooling, a post in the Buy/Sell/Trade section of the Home Shop Machinist board might be worth your time.
