I'd probably not have noticed it myself, but now that I see it, I kinda see why the OP would be concerned. I guess if my local dealer wouldn't help me, I'd either find another dealer who was more reasonable or contact Customer Service.

Is there a chance (seeing that you bought it off ebay) that's it's just a Chinese knock-off? Wouldn't be the first time an expensive brand was counterfeit.

I don't know what the odds are now, but it used to be that 20 to 30 years ago, EVERY Snap-on tool was perfect, ALL the time.

my dealer warranties my ebay bought stuff all the time it helps when you have a side account with the guy. Your dealer imo should have warrantied your wrench.

Here's an idea for ya:

Go back to your SO guy and buy a wrench from him. Next day, take the "defective" wrench back and get another one. Now you have two. Keep them both or sell one on eBay.


FWIW, I feel that this falls into the same catagory as having Sears replace broken tools bought via eBay. It is not right IMO.

How certain are you that is not a Snap On knock-off? The off center broach and crappy chrome on the box end, sounds like a knock-off to me.

I bought on of the short offset boxes several years ago, and has the same thing going on. I was a little bugged about, because I bought it off the truck. I never did ask to exchange it, and it is still going strong. As money gets tighter and tighter, what I do buy, I expect to be perfect. Ebay on the other hand is a different story. I don't expect my dealer to do anything with tools I buy from ebay, although he has been cool about all of my other returns. I picked up an old Mac box several months ago that was filled with old tools. I told him about the find, and then started showing up with broken tools, some of which were 50 yrs old. I would only bring one tool per week, and if he would have turned me down, I would not have been upset. So far I've had no trouble at all with returns, and if I were to show up with that off center broach, I'm sure he would exchange it. I think I'll wait till it breaks, but I don't think it will.

You don't understand, Merk doesn't use his tools, he just showers with them to keep them clean, wipes them down each night with rust preventive before he puts them to bed in velvet lined receptacles and stands gazing at them in awe just looking at their glory and perfection.

Well in that case, why not "camouflage" the box end, and put it in its holder with the thin side down.

Looking at pictures from the other thread, that is a defect worth being concerned about. I could see the box end snapping if you put enough torque on it. If something like this can slip through Snap-On's "top notch" quality control, think of the defects that are getting through that CAN'T be easily seen with the naked eye.

Honestly, I doubt you could find a wrench at Harbor Freight where the stamping would be off by that much, and if you did, Harbor Freight would exchange it for you no problem.

My matco dealer is great for warranty issues but SO not so much.
I would just break it send it in and be done with it.

Why torture yourself? It will only cost three or four dollars to mail that wrench to Snap-on with delivery confirmation. Write that you noticed that the enclosed wrench does not match the quality level of your other wrenches due to the off center box end. Ask that they replace the wrench or return the wrench to you if they believe the enclosed wrench is up to Snap-on's high standards.

You now know what your local dealer's warranty policy is. Wouldn't you like to know how Snap-on will treat this?

You got the wrench cheap, so you have very little to loose by just being honest about it. There is no reason to provide any details about how you acquired the wrench, truthful or otherwise. You have done nothing wrong by buying a wrench from a private individual, and there is nothing wrong with inquiring if America's premier wrench maker will stand by their product.
