I scored great prices at HD on 20 gauge Husky Heavy Duty extra wide cabinets (60% off). My plan is to mount 4 42” lockers on the back of the garage to hold the kids toys and things. Then two 5 or 7 drawer lower cabinets in a separate spot to the side to hold my tools.
The Husky directions call for using the legs to support the cabinets and then mount them to studs for additional support and tip protection.
I’ve read several threads and instructions from NewAge on mounting their lockers and lowers to the wall in a floating setup. In the pictures both on NewAge and threads here, I cannot see how those cabinets and Husky are structurally different.
I’d really prefer to have these cabinets float so it’s easier to clean under, take away a mice hangout, and have what feels like a cleaner install.
I’d take the same approach as NewAge but increase it. The lower three portions of the locker would have a 1/8th by 1” steel strap from the inside, through the cabinet and into studs. Then the top would be the same size steel but in an angle configuration to spread load to the top of the cabinet. Then underneath I’d do some 22” long by 4” tall s channel steel braces with 3/4 plywood on them, creating a floating hidden shelf that would support the feet.
My fear is the s channel steel braces that say they support 500lbs each, really don’t, and then rivets on the back of the cabinet and those inside that attach the back to the corner structural steel, eventually give way.
Should I just be putting these on the floor? Does anyone have up close pictures of how the NewAge cabinets are built to hold together? Thoughts on if my setup would hold?
