Feeding a pole barn

I posted the following a few years ago but life got in the way and never actually did the work. I am doing it now. I have a question, I believe THWN must be in conduit (even indoors ?), this is accurate? I am running the feed from my main panel under my basement, and really do not want to hang conduit from the joists. Is there romex I can run to an exposed junction box ? I think I could use SSR but that is expensive. I appreciate input

“I am going to be installing electrical in my pole barn about 150 ft from house. I have a 200 amp service panel that is full in house with a sub panel next to it. The sub panel is empty so I wanted to feed my barn with it. I am running 100 amps 240V to the barn. #2 Cu THWN in 1 1/2" in shd 40 pvc.”

I would feed the barn from the main panel. (Move something from main to sub to make room.)

Can you plan a different conduit route to avoid more of the basement?

Thhn/thwn has to be in conduit inside or outside.

I would not want splices if I could avoid them. They only add cost and possibly a future headache. Easy to eliminate with a different wiring plan.

Thank you. Yes, it is not hard to move a circuit to sub and feed from main box. My original plan was to just use conduit the whole run just exploring options. Not sure how to even do the sizing calculations with the j/b
