I posted a pic of that same kind of snap on socket. Everyone said it was just a plain old impact socket. I don't believe it.

It's a metric impact socket. The chrome was to identify the fact that it was metric and not standard sized socket.

My first sets of Snap-on chromed metric sockets had two wide ground blackened lines on each socket to signify that they were metric at a glance. I've still got probably dozens of those style sockets.

There's been a number of different schemes over the years by all of the manufacturers to make the metric sockets stand out from the standard ones at a glance. Chrome, ground chrome, chemical blackening, knurling, grooves, etc.

Thanks for information Wrenches of Death

please pictures...

Here's a few of the half inch drive metric sockets that I bought in the late 1970's. They're easier to photograph than my smaller ones. At the time, I bought both shallow and deep sets of the 1/4" drive metrics, shallow and deep of the 3/8" drive metrics, and a shallow set of the 1/2" drive metrics. Over the years, I've lost a few and broken a few so the sets don't match any more. Snap-on changed the appearance of the metric sockets not long after I bought mine which kind of ticked me off. As a result, replacement Snap-on sockets stick out like a sore thumb. After a while I didn't have any real problems with replacing a lost Snap-on one with a much less expensive Vulcan/Williams or Proto either.

The pictured chrome sockets with the ground, and originally chemically blackened, bands were the ones I originally bought as a set. The socket with the two knurled bands was a replacement for one that I either lost or broke. It must have happened within just a few years of when I bought them since it's got a date code of 1979. None of the black ring sockets that I own have a date code.
