I just scored 34 2 bulb T8 fixtures for $200 :rocker:, so now I need to find some LED's to run. At Home Depot yesterday I saw these:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Feit-Electric-32W-Equivalent-Cool-White-4-ft-Linear-LED-Light-Bulb-10-Pack-T848-841-LED-MP-10/206760726

For this price, it's crazy awesome. I'm just curious if anyone else is running them in a shop with a 14' lid. I'm kind of unsure about the "cool white" also.

Thanks

I just installed these in my garage with an almost 13' lid. After doing some reading about led tubes it was recommended that for ceilings over 12' 20w or higher be used. These are 22w and 2310 lumens. You almost need sunglasses it's so bright, I'm not complaining. They cost a bit more than what you posted but to me it was worth it!

Home Depot also offers the Philips 17T8 tube that is 2000 lumens, 400 lumens brighter than the Feit. If I'm not mistaken, it's also even cheaper. I'd go with the name brand over Feit any day.
Good luck

Thanks for the feedback.

The hardest part for us is shipping. Even Amazon is slowly reducing their inventory that they ship up here. Home Depot and Lowes are lame on that also. If it's not on a shelf - they'll either reject the order or charge an insane amount in shipping.

I did see the Philips bulbs yesterday but it was sold individually at $10 each. Not knowing which brands to go for, as I've never bought LED's before, is it worth the $2 difference?

Maybe. 14' is higher than I would like to see a 1600 lm bulb. But because of the fact that you can pick them up, it would be worth a try so that you can see for yourself. And you have a lot of fixtures, so that will help. Maybe you can hang them between 10 and 12 feet? That would help, too.
Good luck

Seems to me like it is almost a third less light than the T-8's ?? 1600 vs 2800 lumens ? I think I would just stick with the T-8's Probably on the shelf most places too.

Hi Bill,
With T8 lamps, only about 1700 of the 2800 lumens actually are delivered. With LED, all the lumens are delivered, so they are pretty much the same output.

I think that depends on the ballast. I still do not see the advantage of LED's at this point in time, especially where he already has T-8 fixtures. Maybe starting from scratch it would be a different story.

You have to keep in mind with flourescent tubes some of the light is being directed up where as with the led tubes the light is all being directed down. So LEDs with less lumens tend to be brighter than their flourescent counterparts.
Also with the removal of the ballasts the LEDs are more energy efficient and have a higher light output vs ballasts installed.
I like the 50,000 hour life and 5 year warranty on the LEDs, I'm hoping I don't ever need to touch them again!

My figures referred to a standard ballast, but similar percentages would still be true with different ballasts.
To give you some of the advantages of LED vs T8:
Twice the life, or more, of T8.
Half the energy, or even less
Better in cold
Work better with sensors
Less heat generated
Better in vibration areas
No flickering
Instant on, no burn up time
Simple lamp swap, no re-wiring, fits right into existing t8 sockets.

Actually, the ballasted versions can be more efficient and have more output. By keeping the power conversion in the ballast instead of putting it in the tube, you can better regulate the tube. Ballasted tubes can be easily found over 2500 lumens using only 19-20 total watts per tube and ballast. For lower ceilings, 1600 lumens using only 14.5 total watts per tube and ballast.

Some great input, thanks! So, if the ballast burns out, does the LED still function properly?

No. In this type of system, if the ballast fails, it will need to be replaced.
There are some "dual source" tubes out there that will work either with or without a ballast, but using them without a ballast requires socket replacement and re-wire.
