Does anybody own a Fero air compressor? The web site says they were made from early 1900s to late 1930s. Gulf gas stations had them. Mine had a Gulf decal on the riveted reciever. The compressor works fine after all these years. John Timmins , Ormond Beach Fl

Bump ! It's been 12 years since I posted this and I still haven't learned much about anyone else having one. Anybody have anything to say about FERO air compressors ? Mine is a 1936.

Thanks A.L. ! Other than the grandson's FERO web site showing some old brochures, I have found little about FERO. They supplied GULF service stations around the country with compressors. Mine is 2 cylinder and the ID plate says mine had a 1.5 HP motor. It burned up and could not be rewound because it was melted in the rotor. The stator windings could be renewed but not the rotor. I installed a new 3 HP 220V single phase motor.

When I brought the damaged motor to the motor shop ( I was an aquaintance to the owner) he turned to the other guys and said, " Don't laugh at this old Westinghouse. It's the best motor in this shop ! "

When I cleaned out my dads house to be sold, I left one identical to that in the basement. Dad got it from his neighbor who ran the local Gulf Bulk Oil station. I think I was maybe 5 years old at the time. Dad and I painted hundreds of cars and ran a lot of air tools with that over the years. Great old compressor for sure. I just ran across a picture of it yesterday on my other computer. I'll post it up when I get a chance.

I would have taken it, but to get it up and out of the basement would have been a feat in itself. Lord only knows how old it is by now.

There is some info in Google books, company ad listings mostly , but most of it is snippet view, so hard to make sense of. Seeing as how it starts showing up in 1931 might give you a founded date, plus one or two years. If you know someone in PA, they may be able to find these in a big city library.

The first book from 1995 may be the winner.

is the grandson you noted? I assumed yours at first, don’t know why.

Bump! Occasionally I repost this hoping someone has a FERO Air Pump. Mine was made in 1936 and came from a GULF station in Palatka, Florida. I've owned this since 1985. It got a new motor, paint job, belts, and decal for it's 75th birthday. The compressor turns 350 rpm with a 240V 1800rpm single phase motor. Arnie Fero's web site went dark a while back. He said his grandfather built the company, and they had a contract to provide air compressors for GULF gas stations. I have found little information about them other than Arnie's web page.
