Could use some advice for purchasing a new zero turn for our property.

We currently run a 2007 JD Z425. Bought it at a year old from a JD employee. It was great when we had a 3/4 acre property but with four acres around the Head Shed where we live now, this ZTR is not keeping up. We mow about 2.5 ac that was row crop fields eight years ago - couple places where this ground is really bumpy and a suspension would help.

My intent was to keep the JD for another year or two, but had a major problem last week. Wife wanted to mow so I thought I’d move the mower up to the back patio so she would not have to walk out to the barn. Filled the gas tank, checked the oil level and drove it up to the patio. When I stopped at the patio, a huge cloud of smoke covered me up. Turned around and smoke was pouring out of the engine compartment from oil hitting the engine and smoking. Immediately shut the engine down.

Oil had poured out of the engine and all over my barn driveway and the new stone path we’d laid from the house patio to the barn last fall. I’m guessing most of the oil was out of the mower. Weird thing is the engine never stuttered or missed before I shut it down. Didn’t lose compression at all.

I checked the JD engine over and could not find the source of the oil leak. Checked the drain plug and still no luck. Took it into the shop but it’s three weeks before they can even look at it.

Even if it’s fixable, I think I need to advance my schedule for replacing the JD. So I started looking at ZTRs. Quickly narrowed my list to Scag and Ferris then test dove the Ferris and think that’s where I’ll land - so here is the issue.

I can buy a 2020 Ferris 700 with a 61 in deck and a 27 hp Briggs motor for $7300 all in (incl tax). These machines have a good suspension but I don’t like the Briggs motor, which is all you can buy now in 2020 700s.

Or I can buy a 2020 800 with a 61 in deck and a 24hp Kawasaki for about $1400 more. Better suspension and much better engine (I think).

I hate to drop nearly $9K on an unplanned purchase like this but I guess that’s what an emergency fund is for. And I should have added, we don’t finance anything but our house. Kinda a Dave Ramsey thing.

Any advice?

I should have added I have looked for used, low hour machines in a 200 mile radius of KC where we live but zero luck. Wrong time of year to be looking. So I think I have to go new.

Also the Ferris rebate program expires at the end of the week.

Hello, Don't know anything about Ferris but,Kawasaki is much better than a Briggs.

When I am in the market for a ztr, I'll look at landscape companies. Here in indiana, there are little to no Deere's, no ferris. Every pro uses exmarks or scaggs with the occasional Walker. Those guys know what holds up.

I use two Scags, one with a 25 HP Briggs and the other with a 19 HP Kawasaki. I'm a huge Scag fan but wish at times they had a suspension. Both engines have given me good service. The $1400 will mean little in the life of the mower, buy what you want now and you won't regret it.

Good advice Midlife. I think I’ll take it.

I see a lot of JDs and Exmarks on commercial trailers here but every landscaping company in my area uses stand up machines and I’m looking for a ZTR. My wife would not run a stand up if her life depended on it.

Briggs owns Ferris.

I mow crappy ground 3 to 4 acres I have a 2006 Ferris diesel with 2000 hours on it. The suspension make it the rough ground a non issue.

Could always get a suspension seat on some other brand. Not sure it would be the same.

I can’t speak to the 700 or 800 model Ferris mowers specifically, but currently have a 3200 72” with the Briggs 37hp EFI, as well as a couple of Ferris 3-wheelers......all I can say is every Ferris I have is built like a TANK!

For my money between the two, I would look at the specs for those two engines and get the one with a higher TORQUE rating. You will, I believe, be well pleased with either one. The suspension makes for a very nice ride.

I have a 600IS and it's still too rough for me, so I bought a suspension seat from Northertool.com for under $300 and now it's very tolerable.
As long as I'm spending your money, get the 800, I have a Kawasaki engine in my 1999 454 Arctic Cat 4 wheeler and it's been great!

Aside from the mower, any though to spending some time grading/smoothing the field? Would be nice in the long run. Suspension or not, it would be easier to mow and be more useful

My wife has a Ferris IS700Z and she mows 3 acres with it. We got a 54" deck as there are some tight spots in the yard. It has a 23 HP Kawazaki engine. I think we have had it 1.5 years now.

Suspension is very nice.

Wife loves it and I don't have to fool with the yard other than occasional weed whacking.

I used to sell the entire Ferris/Simplicity lineup. The independent front suspension on the IS800 is well worth the money. We had very few issues with the Briggs motors and they had a better warranty (not sure if that's true still). We also had very few issues with the Kawasaki motors but every year when I went to the update classes for Kawasaki and Briggs, Kawasaki was the one that was telling us what failures they had seen and to be on the lookout for. Believe it or not they both make excellent engines. The Briggs Big Block EFI is a beast if that's available.

I think it's interesting seeing the summary dismissal of Briggs engine when they power so much stuff very reliably.

6 yrs ago I wanted a tractor style mover and needed one w/ a locking diff to get me up a bunch of hills. I bought a Husqvarna. The model I wanted came w/ a Briggs engine. Used that thing hard for 5 years (We moved a year ago and both stayed as part of the house deal) mowing 1.4 acres and towing an Agrifab lawn vac w/ a 9HP Briggs. Both of those Briggs were 100%. One fall I went to fire up the vac for the first time and realized I hadn't drained the gas out like I usually do. Thinking 'ah ****, that was dumb' but it fired up on the 3rd pull.

I have a Scag and every time I bounce across the yard I think I’m getting too old for this. Lol.
Can’t see spending a ton of money for a better ride tho

I had the Simplicity Ferris 54” ..........the suspension was worth every penny.
I would not buy a zero turn without suspension.q

The pros that mow 8-12 hours know the back and body problems of mowing fast on rough terrain causes. Many pro use stand up mowers to save their body.

I have the ferris 3200 with the 37 hp Vanguard. The suspension is real nice, and the 3200 has the adjustable seat too. Between the 700 and 800, i'd also go with the 800 for the newer style front suspension. My dealer told me on flat level ground, the old style front and new style front you won't be able to tell apart, but on any slopes the new handles much better.

Did you give Brice @ Terry Implement a call and see what they might have?

I did not. Talked to dealers in Harrisonville, Butler, Clinton, Warrensburg and then a couple on the KS side. Ended up finding the mower I was looking for with one of them.

This worked out better than my adventures usually do. Wanted a 700 with a Kawasaki motor, which Ferris no longer offers (have to move up to an 800 now to get the Kawa motor).

But I was able to locate a dealer within an hour that had a 2018 model 700 with a Kawa motor and a 61 in deck. Picking it up tomorrow and will mow as soon as our grass dries out.

Really appreciate all the advice on the GJ forum. You guys are great!

Completely agree, Mike. A neighbor started construction on his new barn. He should have the dirt ready for me to pick up next week, depending on the local rain situation.

I’ll be top grading a couple problem areas on the property, including the septic fields wheee I have some settling. Will also grade around the house foundation and build some berms for the wife. Probably end up moving 15-20 yds or dirt to fix the settling and then washboarding.

What dealer did you end up working with? (You can PM me if you want.) I'm in the same area of KC, been considering picking up a Ferris. Sick of mowing 4 acres with my Kubota BX, nice machine but takes forever.

For the most part becids the motor and drives most of these zero turn mowers are the same. Since you want suspension pick one with suspension, the motor you want and the series of drive you want.
