So this is the open back on my 30-48 pole barn,,, this shot is 15 yr old. It's been finished all that time, vinyl siding top to bottom.

Now my question is I want to attache a 12x24 Lean-to off the back side.

What am I attaching my ledger board to? Go all 30ft and tie it in to the 4 existing 4x6 posts? and side wall header ends? Tucked up under the last truss?

I'm gonna add a 36 door on rear inside, covered area. I'm thinking I need to stand another few 4x6's up inside, and tie together to help carry the load of the Ledger. Door will be to the right side as viewed of the 2nd from right end post.

it sounds like your want a combo ledger/header. so it would need to be able to support your span (say 12' between post) and your leanto span (16' for example) so maybe in the range of 2- 16" 1-3/4" LVLs, properly attached to your posts.

as long as the 'ledger' or header is properly sized, theres no reason to additional 4x6 inside supports. it can be treated like any other header, assuming its properly sized

SO I spoke with a builder buddy, today, and I'm gonna remove siding and OSB and put a 2x12 from end to end. 3 sections each ending on a post.
This should span from the Two 2x12's on each side wall and span the entire length of the barn, then put the OSB back on.
Then I'll attack a 2x10 ledger on the outside in the 24ft area of the 30ft span I want it, and use joist hangers and go from there.

I'll enclose it,, and use metal roofing,,

Tell ya what an awesome wife I have,,, I pulled up this pick,,, to see approx where propane gas line was ran to the meter on back of house,, and she brought me a piece of paper with the due north and due east measurements of where the gas line is. By eyeballing paint marks with those measurements, I can easily see that I'm 2ft from the line to dig my 1 post. But they come for free to mark so I'll be calling them tomorrow. This photo is over 15yr old. So was the paper!

it top pic,,, the circled in red area,, is where I would want to tie in.. on the posts. the last roof truss,,,is nailed to the outside of the truss,,, along with the other 2z4's going down the posts every 2ft to the ground. The osb is nailed to the 2x4's,,, so there is a space between the osb and posts. Unless I got on the inside, and put spacers in there,, Then run lags or ledger loks thru to tie in beam.

I'm here for ideas,,
