Few Questions about torx sockets

Good evening.

1. It was already discussed that Snap On torx sockets are probably the best
Does anybody have any experience with Cornwell and Tekton?

2. There is torx and tamper resistant torx. I assume that tamper resistant torx is not as strong. However, is there any comparison data how much stronger regular torx bits are compared to security torx which have hollow center? I wonder if difference is 5%, 20%, etc and if it really makes a difference (I understand that it would probably depend on the size, I am looking for usual T20-T55 range...)

Some cornwell sockets are just VIM rebrands, which is a high quality brand. I also have Tekton torx bits, which are S2 steel and work well. I have had good luck with any brand selling S2 steel bits.


Do not get tamper as a replacement for normal bits. They will fail more often. How often does one ever encounter tamper torx? For DIY use the additional failures may not be often enough to matter. When dealing with rusted or impacting on security torx bits, they fall apart. Two different tools. IMO tamper torx are typically low torque fasteners, and I can buy a generic hardware store set if need be. I'm not compromising a T40 bit for that.

Some of my Matco bit sockets are VIM, as well.

I agree with the group that TR Torx should not be your main Torx set. I found an NOS SK TR Torx set years ago pretty cheap.

My main Torx sets are MAC and SK (also NOS), and a few Snap-on.

The Snap-on’s last longer than the other brands, especially the gold ones. They are ridiculously expensive… almost stupidly expensive. I overcome having some inferior brands by having a crazy amount of spares. If I see a USA truck tool or industrial set or individual Torx at a garage or estate sale, I buy it.

As often as the bits need service if you really use them you'd be nuts to get anything that can't be warranted locally. For me that means snap on and I'm very happy
