Few vinyl siding mounting block questions

Garage is done, buttoned up, so now I am starting to focus on electrical.

I have a few of these around the exterior:

What is the best way to mount a box with these? The blocks have the screw slots, are those actually used for some reason or do I just trim all of that out and mount an all weather box to the sheathing? Face to sheathing is 1".

On a similar note, I have blocks to hang my outdoor wall light fixtures. They are j-block mounts, 1.5" from face to wall sheathing. This is the same depth as a common steel octagon box. I was going to trim out the block and mount the box to the wall. I need to look at the fixtures to see if there is a gasket with them, otherwise I need to keep water out somehow. If I would have realized it, I would have requested they use the blocks with the plastic box built in. However, those are probably available in white, only.

I'm not sure if you have used them before but they are a two piece design. There is a base that gets nailed to the sheathing and the outer trim piece that snaps over the base after the siding is put up.


My local HD doesn't have much in the way of siding, the Menard's beats them hands down. If you've never messed with one stop by the big box store and take a look at them and get hands on.

Yah -- very hands on, my siding is on, and the blocks are installed. I popped the trim ring off, but it is still not really clear to me the best/intended way to use these specific blocks.

If you didn't put a box behind them then you will have to get a old work box and install that inside. Those boxes you have are made to go over a box recessed into the house

Okay, that's what I want to know. So the ones I have, I would cut a hole the size of the box and put it through the wall? I still have access to inside of the wall (unfinished right now). Then the cover plate over the outlets would sit on top of the slots in the block, correct?

Otherwise, it seems I could just trim out what is there and then just surface mount a box to the wall from the outside. (won't be recessed and might not look as nice I guess....)

Yeah you could do either one. But since you have access to inside I would recess them in
