I was just wondering if anyone else looks at these on craigslist as much as I do and thinks similar thoughts? Has anyone retrofitted a garage/shop with these? I have seen all shapes and sizes. It seems some of the lateral ones would make good under the bench storage; especially any of the surveyor plan types. Some of the drawer tops even match the general look of most tool drawer cabinets. I know there is one poster on here that painted alot of the lateral types red and lined a wall of his larger-than-home hotrod garage.
So, show em if ya got em!

I have about a dozen of the lateral type waiting for the garage to be finished so I can start to organize.

Those map, drafting, plans, cabinets with a shallow drawers look great but they tend to be too deep for a bench.

I have five matching file cabinets in my shop.. 42"wide x 66" high x 18" deep. Five drawers each. The front of the top drawer slides up over the drawer, so that drawer can be used as a pullout shelf,,works good for drill bits and smaller tools. Very heavy duty units with key locks that work....Large top for added storage... Paid $150 each at Habitat for Humanity in Moorhead, Mn....... I also have some regular width two drawer commercial grade cabinets that could be used to support a bench ..
My used bolts are stored in a "free" office drawer file cabinet.. There are three drawers across and nine drawers down.. About 3'x3'x13" .. A second unit was bought for my ofiice, however??
Oil drain pans are stored in a metal wardrobe..About 3'x6'x18" deep..
Pump oil cans, spray lubes, funnels, etc are stored in a metal kitchen pantry cabinet.. About 2'x5'x14".again,"free".
For chains, load binders, load straps, jackstands, axel jacks, etc, I scored a free section of skate lockers 4'x6'x15",,, 24 doors..
For lighter objects such as filters and light bulbs, A pair of RubberMaid four shelf storage cabinets,,about 3'x6'x18". Were on sale for $90 about 5-7 years ago..These are ok for what I use them for, and are nice looking;;;but have gone up in price...Would I buy them at the current price???? maybeeee not..
New nuts and bolts, nails, etc are stored in the typical plastic small parts bins that measure about 14"x18"x6",,each unit has 18 or 60 drawers...these will be SHELF mounted about 3' above the floor, and two high.. That is about a 12' span of those little drawers. Neat looking setup, but they will not take rough treatment.

For parts storage out in my pole shed; I scored a free bunch of old school gym lockers. These are about 12"x30"x12" deep.. They are built as two high units, so those 14 units contain 28 lockers..... Mounted them on a heavy shelf about 18" off the ground, between the poles...

That covers 60' of wall space; Spent about $1400.. Have not painted any of these units, as they are ok as is ? Till I get the urge to "recolor" 4 of them.....

I have 12 of those 18"x36"x72" metal 4 shelf units downstairs,, they are ok where they are;; storing Christmas decorations, paint cans, canned goods and whatever "stuff" that I would not care to see in the shop... I have had some of these for 37 years, but if I had to replace them today; I would buy Gorilla Racks..

We are on the same page as far as the file cabinets on Craig's list,, Habitat For Humanity advertised their file cabinets in the Business section on Craig's list.. Those Stainless Steel restarant service counters and work benches are worth looking at along with steel office desks. .. Don't forget to read the rest of the book on equipment repurposed for shop use.... Remember, It is perfectly legal to beg, borrow, or steal any idea you come across; for your own use..

I got my cabinets on one of those online government auction sites. Paid less than $100 for the lot and a tank of gas to go get them. However, I did sell enough of those that I made my money back. I also tried to incorporate additional storage into each of the benches as you can see in the pics.

You know, I was in the Re-Store shop the other day and saw a few file cabinets of various configuration and began wondering about this very thing. Now that I see what some others have done, I regret not pulling the trigger and getting them.

I picked up a media cart that I am using for one of my machinist chests. A couple of knobs from the thrift store and a new lock from Ace Hardware and I was in business.

My bench is 30" deep and I put 2 of the older 2 Drawer "non-lateral" cabinets under it to take full advantage of the depth. I use them store bulky power tools (sorry - no pics).

It does seem there are others as well, lol.

smedly, that is exactly what I am thinking about doing for a shallow L shaped workbench.

darkk, yep, those are the red ones I was referring to. Very nice setup!

jsb025, I really like the multiple 3 drawers.

BDT/NWMN, I would really like to see that setup. It sounds sweet!

I've got a couple tall filing cabinets which I use for tool storage and misc fasteners, etc. I also have a sliding door unit at my welding bench to store all the helmets, gloves, clamps, tungstens, etc. I love em.

I just picked up 4 of these cabinets, and plan to get them hung in my garage shortly. Question for you guys about hardware for securing the adjacent cabinets together - they're thin (22 gauge), so is there any trick hardware that mounts flush or close to it? Just trying to keep the interior of the cabinets as clean as possible...

I have always used good screws and fender washers. I prefer the coated deck screws, they seem to hold up better. They are not flush, but damn close. Put some on the top, middle, and bottom.

I got a few old file cabinets free from my girlfriend's work. They only had 3 drawer ones so I cut them down to 2 - easy as they are riveted together - & made the bench to fit over them. The older ones are usually heavier duty it seems. Another one sits under my other bench. As mentioned, you do need a deep bench to fit in a std file cabinet.

I kept asking my wife(she works in an office,I dont.)how much weight she thought they would hold.

Thanks for the pics guys.

The office I was working at was going to throw a bunch of cabinets out. I offered to haul them off to the recycling yard. They said I could keep the money for my trouble. I hauled them to my workshop instead... :)

Built a 2x base to set them on:

And then painted them with Hammerite paint:

I have three that were originally for sewing patterns. Each drawer is divided into three bays. Deep sides, and built stout.
