I had a new idea. Covers with weak magnets that just snap on. I wanted them to feel kind of like an Apple Ipad cover, the way it just snaps in place.

I was also worried about magnetizing my files as someone (I believe Outlaw) mentioned earlier.

I did a test. I left magnets on either side of a file for a week. Then I did some filing to see if steel would cling to it. It appeared not to.

I am guessing this is because they are weak magnets- only a little stronger than the average fridge emblem.

I ran across these 2 wooden racks in a junk store and I knew I'd find a use for them. They keep the files up so the handles clear the bottom of the box and stay level. If I had 24" drawers I could alternate the handles on both sides for double the capacity.

My round files and small triangular files could use a similar system. I just have them on a doweled board I had used for 1/4" sockets until I come up with something better.

I've just re-arranged a bunch of drawers so I've labeled the drawers with felt pen till I become familiar with where everything is.

This is my other one with coarse foam that has slots cut in it:

I agree, great variety in the handles

What is the green drawer liner composed of?

I have some with tubing on them. I put the appropriate size tubing under a hunk of steel for a night, and they end up oblong. Go on a file nicely. I used clear tubing that I picked up cheap.

Also cheap, no adhesive, shrink tube works and comes in the correct shape.

Pictures of files I keep in a small kit for use on my chainsaws.

I too have a drawer similar to that in one small shop. Been working on the tubing covers....however...

In my main shop I have what looks to be a pegboard fixture that has 3" slotted
spaces. Most of them hold 2 files each. I just have it (fence) stapled to my wood wall.
This fixture provides good, quick access. Would not be hard to duplicate.

No camera at present or I would take a picture. Perhaps next week.

Pictures.

I have a copy of a WWII Navy guide to using hand tools that has a picture of a piece of cardboard folded up like a fan or accordion with the blades placed in the folds and a few rubber bands around the whole lot to keep it closed. I think the caption says it is "The way to store file blades" lol

A guy could take an old cloth carpenters work /nail pouch and have the misses sew in a bunch of dividers and then you could just roll them up and they wouldn't take up much room at all.

I'm surprised so few people have file cards present right with their files. I'll post some pics of my files tomorrow.

I have my main flat ******* file on the shelf by my lathe in a cutlery tray along with most often needed items, also in there is the file card. Then I have a drawer of small files, maybe 50 or so for dealing with de-burring of machined parts. Then a small collection of larger files that almost never get used.
