Hi Guys,
Just setting up my new workshop - and I have much less space than I had in my old home - which had a large garage. I had a nice shelving system for my files - punches and chisels there - but now I have to really be smart about space saving.

Just wondering about your ideas with photos about storing these items.

I was told by my Father as a child not to have files touching each other when storing them - don't know if that is old school or not - but I have been always laying them flat on shelves next to each other since then - maybe all this time I have been wasting space - who knows?

Anyway - it would be great to see some ideas.
Thank you in advance.

This is how I store my files and chisels just something simple nothing too hard.

My son about a month ago came running home with a monster pizza cart that his boss needed cut down in size so I was left with a little scrap metal that I turned into a file holder.

The other is held on a peg board, I got a fantastic deal from lowes on their rubber file handles and I bought them out plus I told everyone on the GJ at the time of the last American made file and I also bought them out from lowes.

^^^I've heard that too but I say B.S. I must have >100 files all in a dedicated toolbox cabinet drawer and they're all touching each other and "living happy".

I'm sure the few times I'm opening the drawer they aren't self destructing.

I think the problem would be if you cram all your tools and files in a carry around toolbox that's "always" getting dug thru and/or tossed around.

I also have always heard the story NEVER LET THEM TOUCH from my Father, my shop teachers ,the hardware store employees, my friends, their friends, old tool videos, shop books , etc. So I have always separated them.

You might be right but I figure why go against all that old and wise sage advise...;)

I vacuum seal my files after each use but I make sure I clean out any possible dirt or grime with a soft bristle tooth brush then a fine haired paintbrush.

Wrap the files in paper and put them all in the same drawer.

....and using only Cosmoline paper.

Good idea, just ain't going to happen. I'm too busy waxing my wrenches with Zaino.

Files are hard. Very hard. They can damage each other, but only if you are whacking them against one another with some vigor. Just bumping each other in the toolbox won't hurt them at all.

I just oppose the handles and set them in a drawer. That way they kind of nest together and fit pretty well.

Hey thank you guys - that helped me out - especially the rubber handles and hanging them on a pegboard - many of mine do not have handles...
