Filling a differential - what tool/device?

We use a Lincoln 1254 gear oil dispenser mainly for 80W-90. Doesn't take much to empty and clean it for different weights. Works better than the cheaper clamp-on bucket type

But what if you already had a piece of vinyl hose and a gear oil container? Why order and wait for it to come from Amazon when you could be doing burnouts today?
This. A 10' section of vinyl tubing is $5, it slips right on to the gear oil bottle ****** and Bob is your uncle. I get probably 10 fluid changes out of the roll of tubing and I don't worry about a $10 Chinese pump failing on me mid fluid change.

being "professional" isn't about buying a tool.

12 Qts equaled 3 gallons when I was in school.
What oil goes in the trans?
What oil goes in the rear?

My Tacoma manual recommends 75W-85 GL5 gear oil for the diff, 3.12 quarts, and Toyota ATF WS for the 5 speed manual transmission, 11.5 quarts. Reviews on the Toyota forums suggest that Valvoline Max Life Multi-Vehicle (ATF) is an acceptable substitute for the transmission. Amazon sells this in a case of 3 gallons, perfect amount for the job.

I use a motive power fill for large jobs, small dedicated pump bottles for differentials. A little kerosene through the power fill then gravity drain/dry cleans it up nicely.

11.5? As I stated earlier that's Fuller 10 speed case size.

Here's what I see for about the last 20 years on a Tacoma.
I don't believe the new ones even come with a stick.

Not on a Toyota Tacoma that doesn't have a dipstick... Wrench97 is correct. A scan tool is used to check fluid temperature - or you go back and forth some number of times with the shift lever to get the temperature warning light to tell you if you're in the right range for checking trans fluid level. Fluid level is then checked by removing the overflow bolt from the bottom of the pan. Crazy, stupid system, but that's what Toyota did...

Same with our BMW E46

Mine is a 2010, manual still available but hard to find. I double checked the truck's manual, and it has a different listing for the automatic transmission. The 11.5 seemed awfully high to me for a manual transmission. I have not crawled under there yet to get an idea of its capacity. Manual transmissions I am used to take gear oil. I will check on the TacomaWorld forum for further information. Maybe it was a misprint.

cheapest way is to buy an extra quart or two.
put the funnel end on the first bottle, add a piece of hose long enough to go into the fill hole without popping back out.
Leave the bottle upright and squeeze it.
You wont empty the entire bottle, but thats why you bought extra.
Ive done many a diffy and manual transmission fill with nary a drop spilled this way.

12 qts for the trans?

Buy a 5 gal bucket of oil and use a Lincoln pump.

This here is the solution

I have one for tractor fluid, and another for gear oil

I also put the buckets on casters, so I can scoot them around easily, even if I’m laying under a vehicle.

My sincerest apologies to forum members who have been so kind to contribute to this thread. I just looked over my manual again. Not realizing I was on a page dedicated to automatic transmissions (it was right at the top of the page, right in front of my eyes), I saw a 6 speed, and then a 5 speed, and said to self that must be my 5 speed manual. It still didn't make sense to use ATF in a manual. Then I turned the page, and this was a whole page dedicated to manual transmissions. :) My 5 speed manual takes 3 and some change quarts of the same gear oil that goes in my diff.

After looking over all the options mentioned, I've decided to go with the OTC pump.

You need to be VERY careful on the GL spec for the lubes.
Many manual transmissions take GL4 gear oil.
Differentials take GL5.
I would NOT mix the two, even if the weights are nearly the same or identical.

This Valvoline product says it works for GL-4 or GL-5. My manual says 75W-85 GL-5 for the diff, and 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 for the transmission. I figure I can go with the 75W-90 GL-5 for both. Since I'm in AZ, the 75W-90 should not be any problem.

If your manual says GL5 is fine in the transmission I would say you are fine.
I have a car where GL4 is only approved for the 5 speed manual gear box. But GL5 is fine for the front and rear differentials. So I end up having to buy different grade gear lubes as a result. Yellow metals in transmissions sometimes do not like GL5 rated fluids.

f the fluid is rated GL4/GL5 your fine, the 75w-85/75w-90 is really also a mute point too there isn't enough difference to worry about.
