Finally a garage just for me!!

So long story short,I am finally a home owner,well technically tomorrow.Closing is scheduled for tomorrow.The house my wife and I purchased has a garage that isnt heated or insulated.There is a enclosed but not heated breezeway between the house and the garage.The garage was an addition built sometime after the house was built.The plus side of the garage.Its all brick on the exterior just like the house.

The downfall being.Its not heated or insulated.There are outlets in the garage and electricity is wired.Being that im in the automotive trade I am planning on using the garage for my personal cars heating and insulating the garage is important to me.

So with that said my plan is to change out the garage door for a insulated one.Install insulation,and enclose the walls and ceiling.

So my question is,what is the most common used insulation that will work best in my garage??

I live in Northern NJ,so I want to insulate my garage rather well.There are 2 doors that lead into the garage and a double wide garage door.

And what can I use to heating??I was thinking either a wood burning furnace or a waste oil heater.But being that both my cars run on synthetic oils its hard to find a waste oil heater that will burn synthetic oil and be reliable.

Insurance company won't allow you to have wood heat as there is gasoline in there.
You are closing tomorrow so this means the Insurance company and the Bank own that house.

If you decide to run with oil burning heater. Check out your local Golf Courses. In the Maint. Facility. Ask to speak with either the grounds superintendent or equipment tech. They will have Gallons of waste oil that most will let you have.

Just keep in mind some of those heater use up quite a bit of oil. Thought about electric?

I never really thought of using electric.Mostly because from what Ive read its not very efficient way to heat any place.

Considering I work for a facility that repairs vehicle on a day to day basis I dont think waste oil will be an issue but thanks for the tip.

I am guessing it is a small garage so a waste oil heater would probably not be a good choice for you.

Synthetic oils burn great but getting them to light can be an issue. On our Clean Burn burners we have an adjustable preheat block thermostat that solves that problem by bumping up the temp which allows the synthetic oil to ignite easily.

The garage is a 20x20 possibly bigger.Just looking at my options.Anyone else have any ideas???

Hey guys im back its been a while,been very busy with work.But I measured my garage its 18 feet wide by 24 feet deep, 9 foot walls with a hip style roof.The garage is framed with 2x6's.I am wondering what is the best way to insulate the walls and roof??Should I just buy insulation, or try the spray on expanding foam?Also do i need a vapor barrier???
