It won't be much, but I'm finally getting some type of bench installed in the new garage. I've cleared out about 7 feet of wall space to put it in. It will be nice to use the woodworking tools without running them on the ground and having to kneel down all the time.

Having a real top to do final build ups will also be nicer than the plywood over saw horses I've been using. It will also have a 5 foor power bar mounted under a shelf to provide lots of outlets and a spare 4 foot aquarium light to provide bench lighting.

Pic of wall space to get started

Phase I of my workbench is complete.

The final dimension is 6ft long, 39in wide and 40in tall. The lower shelf is about 10in off of the ground. Mounted on the underside of the shelf is a 5 foot power strip and a 4 ft T8 light fixture that I took off of my aquarium.

As you can see in the photo the lower shelf is big enough to hold most of my bench tools minus the band saw and the scroll saw. The table saw is on it's own mobile cart that I made a few months ago.

That is an 8" wilson vise on the shelf next to the miter saw.

This will have to do for now as Phase II won't happen until I have a storage shed for the bicycles and all of the gardening equipment that's mounted on the wall to the left of the bench.

Until then, I'll continue to use the saw-horse bench that I beefed up with 2x4's while building this bench.

I installed a shelf, sloped backwards to the wall, above the work bench.

It serves two purposes:
  • A tire rack.
  • A mounting surface for an over the bench lighting.
