Retired in October and am now planning some workspace at my house at the Jersey Shore. Originally thought about building a detached garage but was advised that (1) zoning in my town only allows a two car garage and (2) building costs are about $225 to $250 per sq ft. for local builders. I do not want to spend $200K on a garage. My current 20X20 garage was built in 1950 and has a hipped roof. You can only marginally open the drivers side door in the left hand space. My current idea is to add a 16X10 space which will provide workshop space and allow doors to be opened and space all around the project. The addition will be hipped to fit the rest of the house so no high lifts or stacking cars. Will be reading the forums for advice on lighting, wiring, heat, and mid-rise lifts.
