I'll try and keep things short, but sorry in advance for the rambling on.....
Long time lurker, finally able to post.
I'm a life long garage rat, it's my happy place. I've always been "into" anything cars, trucks, RV's, boats, basically anything with an engine. Built many race and street cars for lot's of people and myself. Really enjoy fabrication, metal work, etc. Been working pretty much my whole adult life out of a 24'x28' garage that I built basically because that was the biggest I could put on our small property. My dream was to buy a property with acreage and build a 40x60-ish, hydronic heated floors, spray foam, lifts, yada, yada, yada.

Well, the kids were finally all grown with careers of their own so my wife and I bought a beautiful property outside of town with 12 acres. The house has great bones and is quite fine the way it is, but was last remodeled when it was built I think, lol. So, mamma has my honey-do list pretty full. We purchased last July and already have done all 3 bathrooms over (2 of them being a complete gut), and designed and purchased all the cabinets for a completely new kitchen that includes adding a sliding door and replacing and relocating a large window. However, Mama said I could take some time off inside the house to built my new Barn !

The property already had a 28'x48' post frame garage that is in pretty good shape. The 'few' issues I have with it are 1. only 9' ceilings, 2. the roadside has 1-16' wood overhead door, I always hated these as they are heavy and not really wide enough for 2 vehicles, and 3. the electric was only ran as a 30 amp service. Which isn't very good for the plethora of welders, milling machine, and bandsaws that I have. So, for this barn I already purchased 2-10' wide commercial overhead doors, and am starting a plan to upgrade the wiring (sux that it's like 100 yards from the main house with 200 amp service...). However, this barn is going to wait a bit as the main reason for this thread is the "new" barn.

Because I have the existing barn, I have changed my wants and needs a bit. I want the new barn basically connected to the existing one, so to keep it comfortably within the properly line and along the terrain as I want, I have settled on a 32' x 56'. The existing barn runs north and south and is an eave entry. I am building the new barn east to west with a gable entry. The walls will be 16' high to both tower above the existing barn's roof peak and to accommodate our 13' tall diesel pusher RV. I have also elected to forgo the radiant heat and spray foam insulation as I no longer plan on heating this space for now. My workshop will be in the 'other' barn. Additionally, I have not designed any electric during this phase as that will come when I pull a permit for the main barn re-wiring. I am building this all out of pocket and doing the electric and any insulation / heat down the road will help ensure I won't have to borrow any money to complete it. One 14' x 14' overhead, and 36" man door along the front, and 1-10'x10' door at the rear for tractors, 4 wheelers, etc. The design includes perma-column post bases, 3-ply glu-lam posts, 32' trusses with 24" overhang, and traditional metal siding and roof panels.

The existing barn had a 12' x 28' lean-to at the north end, the first order of business was to remove this, and level the property. We also dropped 8 pine trees that were in the area of the new build. 1 large oak sat right next to the lean-to and hung over the existing barn, I paid to have that one cut down as I wanted no part of it.
On to the pics so-far.

Well, last Friday a friend came with his dozer, removed all the stumps, and dug the pad. I was all set to have an excavator with a 30" auger delivered Friday to drill all the holes, and it's rained for 4 1/2 days straight so far.... Ugh, looking like I'm going to cancel the excavator until next weekend.

Oh, and you can see the Perma-Columns, pads, and 3-ply posts came in. Trusses are scheduled for 5/20. I had it all planned to fall right into place. The weather has other plans... lol. 20250506_171252.jpg

Well, the weather has been a bear here in upstate NY. Wet, wet, WET. This weekend we dug-in as we already put it off a week due to the rains. I knew it was going to be a sloppy mess, but pushed forward anyway. We got all the holes dug at 52" which will put the concrete part of the column 10" above grade, which is right in the middle of the spec of 8-12".
We set 4 columns before dark last night, I'll have to get some pics and add them. First thoughts on the columns and bases are pretty much as I expected. Although I was complaining a bit about NYS and their code rules. Due to requiring engineering for this project, it came back needing to use of 24" pads under the columns instead of the 16" bases I had originally planned on using. This obviously required a bigger hole. In order to have the hole big enough and have some "wiggle" room I decided on a 30" auger bit. Well, it's not easy to dig 22 holes 30" diameter, 52" deep, in rocky virgin soil, but we did it. In hindsight, I wish I stuck with a 24" bit, maybe not but who knows.
Anyway, pics as we have them so far.

Ugh...we've been hit with a 'Nor easter. I have no idea how many inches we've received so far, but I'm better off taking the lumber for this project and build a boat. At this rate, I won't have it completed until next year. I really had hoped on hitting it hard during the upcoming 3-day weekend. Now, I'm not sure it will even begin to dry out by next week. Oh, well I guess......20250522_114454.jpg

We have been able to get in between rains and all the posts are set ! The massive rain we had last week caved in most of the empty holes with 4-6" of sticky muck. We had to hand dig them out and get them leveled again. Backfilled all the holes, awaiting another "final" tamp. After all the post were set, we went back and re-checked all the measurements and I was happy to find them right where I want them. The corner diagonal measurement is within 1/8".
The Foreman got a new pink hard hat as a joke, but she wore it all evening lol.

Another weekend is over. Happy with the progress. May not look like much, but got the holes all compacted, grade board done, and the corner posts in. Was kinda chilly which actually helped and a bit of rain off and on. This week is supposed to be hot and mainly dry. Hope to make a big swing at the posts and framing. Also ordered some gravel to start filling it in. I have a standing order for my concrete guy, if he gets an opening they are coming to do it. I'll hold off construction if need be to get that done.

We can't win with this Upstate NY weather. I read that the last dry weekend we had was November 16/17th. We managed to have 2 3/4 dry days, but they were weekdays. Still made some decent progress after work. Trusses are here, hoping to have all the carpentry done by the end of next weekend so I can schedule the boom truck to set them. 20250606_105302-1.jpg

Finally got all the posts set and a fair amount of the wall girts up. Everything is pretty square and true. Because I am setting the trusses in a notch of the posts I've been pretty critical with measurements. After the second row of wall girts went up on the north side, I laid a set on top of them and marked exactly where all the posts landed. I then took that set and put it up on the south side and found all the posts within 1/16" to 1/8" of the marks with one post being out about 3/8". A little tug here and there and we have them the same side to side. It can still be racked a bit, but our diag measurement is still good. What I would like to do is to hold off on more wall girts and install the 2x10 header all the way around in the same manner. I'm ordering a scissor lift as these 57 year old knees don't like to climb much anymore. Just has to stay dry enough to not sink it.
Oh, and we have more gravel coming.
Cheers !505651940_9842661055781079_207424147855598604_n.jpg

Another long weekend in the books. Welcome to upstate NY weather, this weekend was ridiculously hot, but hey, it was dry except a brief downpour mid-day Sunday. Set the trusses Friday late afternoon, all the prep work really paid off, we were able to set all the trusses in about an hour and a half. I'll have to update the pictures from end of day Sunday. I got all the purlins done except the first bay, plan on finishing that tomorrow after work. A few odds and ends and the framing will be complete. The roof and wall metal should be here anytime, but we have two trips scheduled that put us out to after the 4th of July. It's coming, just slow, 75% has been by myself. My wife is a rockstar and makes up about 22% of the rest of the build, LOL.20250620_135627.jpgIMG_20250620_172008 (2).jpg

Got the gable end wrapped, base flashing on, and corners installed. Doing it all off a ladder, by myself, is killing the already bad knees. Looking like I'm going to get a lift to do the soffit adapter, j-channel, and gable panels. I think the soffit and fascia will most likely be next spring, we'll see if the weather holds.20251021_101326.jpg

Was there ever thought to "join" the two buildings? I know you said "basically connected". I'm doing something similar and am thinking of actually connecting it to the current garage to add space.

I had the same thought. Depending on whether one or both of the spaces is to be conditioned.

I did think about joining the two buildings and actually had a design drawn up to include an expansion joint. Then I would have a garage door separating the two. I abandoned it after the town wanted it all re-engineered as I didn't include it in my original plans. Who knows, it might happen someday....... ;)
I am planning on redoing all the fascia, soffits, and siding to get rid of the T-111 on the old barn next. I'm standing my ground that it's a repair for rotted materials and not applying for a permit (already had discussions with code guy...)
