The greatest part of America: "BECAUSE I CAN!"

The same part of my heritage that makes me inform you (for your own benefit, of course), that if I ever encounter money, I will be out-doing you.:lol_hitti

yeah, right, but a man must have his dreams, right?

Well, today my son was hanging out with his grandma and my wife went out shopping, so I had some time to myself, so I decided to prime the I beam and post. I bought the primer several weeks ago, and just never had the time to paint it, so today I got it all finished.

I had no idea it would take me that long, but I guess when you are a painting a 45' beam, its going to take a couple of minutes/hrs. I think from start to finish, it took me about 3 hrs.

Anyways here are some before and after pics:

The Before:

Now the after:

SANY0974.jpg

I still done know what the finish product will look like yet, but I wanted to get the primer on it so that no other rust starts forming.

I hope to be able to post up some pics tomorrow of more progress, but it looks like there may a chance for rain, for the first time in a VERY long time.

What color are you going to paint the beam/pole? What's your color/design scheme for the entire space going to be? I.e. modern/sleek autoshop or old school hotrod style, or something else?

Love this build!!!

Was there anyway around not having that pole supporting the I-Beam? I see them quite frequently, and really dislike them.

He could of not installed the beam without the pole but the engineer probably did it that way because not having one will consist of more money for material and labor.

I think I am just going to paint the beam and post black. I was thinking doing something cool, but seeing how it took me over 3 hrs just to paint it one color, doing some type of stripping or something like that, would take more time than what I want to spend on it. I still have way too much to do right now, and maybe down the road, I may do something.

The color scheme of the garage will consist of 4 colors, red, black, grey and white. I am thinking of getting RaceDeck for the whole front side of the garage, which is 20 x 42, and doing a grey boarder, with a single strip of red, then grey again, and the very center being solid black. That way if a car leaks or anything like that it will not show up as bad.

SO the walls with have grey on the bottom up to about 3 or 4 ft, and then a small stripe of black, and then red on top of that. Then the rest of wall will be white along with the ceiling.

^^ That is correct. It does not look like it, BUT there is ALOT of load on that beam. The second floor is sitting on that beam, AND most of the truss weight is on there too. That beam is 16 67 beam, 16" wide and 67 per ft if you were to cut a peice off.

Another Update..........boy seems I have done this not too long ago:headscrat

Anyways, the bricklayers FINISHED TODAY, yeah!!!!!! And they did a great job too, so they moved all of their stuff out today, so now we are ready to move on with all the other stuff that needs to happen around the garage.

The contractor and his guys, continue on trimming out the freeze board and such.

The Drywallers applied their final coat today, and will start sanding everything down tomorrow.

The painter and his crew will start on Thursday.

The concrete guys are going to try and frame up the new driveway tomorrow, all depends on the rain that is in the forecast. But, I am sure this time that I will have all the concrete work finished by the end of the week.

Once that is finished, I will be able to start grading and try to get some seed and straw down before it is too late.

Also this week, the water line, electris line, phone line and cable lines will get dug and ran in conduit from all the boxes and too the garage.

Enough talky and more pics................here we go.

The front entry way FINISHED with the brick:

One with the front door open just for S & Gs:

Finish coat on the drywall, ready for sanding:

A Shot of the drywall in the stairwell, looking down from the second floor:

Here is the Trim that they finished up on the hill side of the garage. Really gives it a whole 'nother look, I think:

Well, thanks for looking again, and I hope to be able to show you more tomorrow, but there is a 70% of thunderstorms in the forecast, so who knows though.

Till Next time.................

Just saw the covered door, great idea that makes life so much easier in bad weather, yet so few residential buildings do it.

Yes, yes I am getting super excited. There is still alot to be done, but we are heading down the home stretch. I think I will be able to be in by the end of next month. Well, let me say the garage should be done, but I want to get everything set up before "moving in".

Yes, the small covered porch is nice, since that is the only "people" door into the garage on the first floor.

Man your garage is coming along so nice. It looks great! Thanks for the updates.
I am glad I am not the one who has to sand all of that drywall. Can you say "drywall dust".

Update for today:

For the FIRST time in this build, Since Aug 9th, I had my FIRST rain delay.

The drywallers did get most of all the sanding done and we are ready for paint, BUT, my contractor did not get much done on the outside trim becasue of the rain.

The rest of the week is clear skys, so I may get concrete by Friday after all.

Sorry for not having any pics tonight, but hope to have some up tomorrow for ya.

Yeah, we got hammered pretty good, but the worst of it only lasted about 15 min and then it just rained the rest of the day.

I talked with my contractor this morning and he was digging the water line and said that once he got about 2" in the dirt, dust was flying around like it never had rained.

I hope to have some pics up tonight of all that went on today, since it is beautiful out, clear blue skys and high 60's.

Business as usual on this thread then.

Awesome pictures.
Awesome progress.
Awesome garage.

And nearly ready for me to move in!!!! :bounce:

Buzz........I was wondering if you were going to post anymore, and thanks for the kind words.

Have you figured out your commute yet?

Sorry I was not able to post up last night, but the wife and I had a show to go to. Plus most of all the progress is burried in the yard. They ran the electric line, water line, cable and phone lines yesterday to all the existing juction boxes that are already in my yard.

So the plumbing inspection was passed, so now I have water, and the electric line will get inspected in a day or so, and then I will have power.

Friday, they are digging the hole for the propane tank to be set in, and I hope to have concrete as well.

Oh, yeah, you think you thought of it all, UNTIL drywall goes up and THEN you think of more stuff you needed in the walls. The compressor that I am buying has a auto drain on the bottom of it with a 110 plug, well guess what, I FORGOT to put a plug in my compressor rm. Man, my electriction is going to kill me, since he will have to fish a line over to there, unless we can figure something else out. Pretty much *****..........oh well it happens.

I've been lurking.

Really busy at the moment because the builders have finished up on our house extension so I'm painting every spare hour I have got, my wife is 32 weeks pregnant with our first so that is taking up more and more time and I've been ill for the last week but feeling better now.

I've got the commute down to about 18 hours each way. I just have to figure out how that and working and sleeping can fit into 24 hours and I'm laughing

24-18-18-7.5(work)-8(sleeping)= -27.5 hours Not too bad really ;)

I don't think you will ever think of everything in advance. We're having some of the plumbing redone in our brand new extension because of a genius idea I had two days after the plumber was finished!! :)

It happens to us all.

Hey, congrates on the new baby coming AND a new addition on your home. Sounds like you have your hands REALLY full for a while, but great to hear from ya.

Hmmm... What about if you travel in just one direction... That way you'd be able to use the time zones in your favor and even gain some time...

Well, they got a little bit done today.

The painters were there and they were able to get the whole garage primed, ceiling and all AND they finished all the coats on the ceiling and only have one more coat to do on the walls, the base coat of white that is.

You are not going to beleive this, but, they went through 20 GALLONS of white paint and they painted until they ran out at the end of the day and still have another coat on the walls to do. At least I got some buckets out of it.

They have a couple other jobs to do, so they will most likely be back at the first of next week to paint the beam, and finish the white, then the colors will go on.

The contractors continued on the outside trim and freeze board. The electric meter box has been installed and we hope to have power by next week and make a couple plugs live to make it easier for them to work.

The water line is hooked up and I now have water, and no leaks, not that we had any doubt, but still.

So on to the pics of the fresh new white paint, I know it looks the same, but here are a bunch of pics, of which I hope you can see the difference.

Oh, I forgot to mention one VERY important and cool thing, at least I think, is today I was talking with the painters as they were cleaning up and they told me that my drywall was some of the BEST drywall work they have seen in years!!!!

One day when I showed up after work, I saw a very large spot on the wall, about 5ft by 5ft, from where the drywallers mudded, and I asked what that large area was, and they said that the wall was out a little bit so they floated it to make it straight!!!! Most drywall guys just do the joints and that is it, these guy on the other hand went that extra step to make it RIGHT, THANKS GUYS.

I can't say enough about my contractor and all the subs he uses. Every one of them are top notch and do a GREAT job. Heck, you can look down my brick and it is straight as can be!

Anyways, we still have NOT heard back from the concrete guys, so WHO know what the hell is going on there, but we will have to see, they may come tomorrow morning, dig it all out and pour that afternoon, who knows.

Next set of pics will be most likely Saturday night, since I have something to be at tomorrow and Saturday I have to work and then go pick up straw for the landscapers that are coming at the beginning of the week. ( I am getting the straw for FREE, 20 bales of it!!!!)

Thanks agian for putting up with what looks like the same pics, I hope you guys are seeing the small suttle differences that I can see.

Did the painters roll or spray the primer? it looks like the rolled it all. I woulda used a sprayer, but thats just me! Looks GREAT by the way!

I think they sprayed the primer and they rolled everything else with the 2ft rollers they have.

I was told that IF they spray, they still back roll it to give a uniform look, since you can get light and dark areas with spraying it. Also, if you go and touch up a part of the wall later on down the road, it will be hard to match the sprayed part.

Totally Awesome! It is really coming together. So what color scheme and flooring are you going with? Did you decide on what type of lift as well? Keep the pictures coming!

Thanks

Floor, I think that I am going with RaceDeck in the front half of the garage, in the sitting area, I am thinking of getting a remnant peice of carpet, since it will be cheap and I know that it will get trashed, but it will be a nice place for my boy to play and hang out when he is out there with me.

The Lift, well, I am still torn, I may just go with Rotery, since KOI carries them and all the parts for them, it will be easy to have some one come and take a look or even get the part locally if I need to.

Walls, will be grey up to the plugs in the wall, then a small red and black stripe, with the rest white.

Good idea on the flooring and the colour scheme sounds very restrained and tasteful.

Excellent progress as usual! Regarding the flooring, are you sure you want racedeck vs epoxy? I'm partial to epoxy. And I'd go Mohawk for your lift, if you can justify the money, being that its made here at home. Rotary is my next favorite, they are really excellent lifts. My concern with Rotary is the COO, as I'm a fan of Made in the USA products. Bendpak is NOT made in the USA, and they keep that under wraps.

Regarding Rotary reliability, the trade school I attended has a small fleet of new Rotaries, I want to say 10 of them, all purchased 12/2006. These things are abused by newbs who don't know better, and they have had zero issues. Besides the time I got an instructors truck stuck at the top... He was pretty freaked out. Apparently if you lock out a truck, don't do it at the top of the travel, because when you lift it off the locks, it hits the stop bar, so you can't lift it ALL the way off the locks. Took about 15min before the lift decided to disengage. This is one of the new A10i in bay models, FWIW.

KYGTP I know lots of guys are viewing your build with lots of frequency and amazement. Just wondering if you ever thought of having an open house for the GJ board viewers? I think you would get lots of visitors. You could probably even get some vendors to show up with displays and bargains.

I am in central Ohio about 2 hours away.

Just a crazy idea.

Thanks for hearing me out and good luck with the rest of the build.

Thanks for the Pic, I am going to try and figure out how high up I want the grey to go and how wide my black and red stripe are going to be. I need to let them know by Tuesday, as that is when they will be finishing up my painting.

I am going to pick up some sample paint today to put on the wall and see where I want it to be.

Yes, The floor I want to do Racedeck, due to the fact that the concrete guys screwed up my floor, with small dips all through out it. They said they would grind it, but at that time I did not know what I wanted to do and did not want the stone in the concrete to end up showing because of how much they would have to grind.

I am getting the rest of my concrete work for free, well all the labor, for their screw up.

I am going to go with a Rotery SPOA10, the one that is made in Madison, IN, a little more pricey, but there is a local Co that carries them and has a whole service team to service them. To me, that make me feel better about it. If I ever have anything go wrong, the guy shows up with a truck full of parts and can fix it.

I have thought about have a little open house, I just don't know yet. Having Vendors show up, that would be cool, but I doubt that they would come out just for a "garage" get together though, and who would come??

I will keep everyone posted and maybe this spring we may do something, and get some GJ viewer to stop up and say hey, if there are that many of you in the greater Cincinnati area, or want to drive just to look at a garage. I'd say there aren't many, or I could be wrong, Don't know.

I will be building soon (probably spring) now. I have taken a lot of ideas from this build. Some things I never thought of, you have done. About the open house; there was a phrase used once..."Build it, they will come", and I bet they will. I know I will for sure.
