Finally finished my floor!!

Just thought I'd throw out some pictures of my floor I finished this afternoon. I used Butterfield Color Coat in Gull Gray. It's a solvent based sealer,not epoxy. Lots of work on this as I had to strip the old sealer off using a concrete grinder from the rental store. I attempted to roll this sealer on but had too many air bubbles with the roller. Lucky I have my own floor buffer so I was able to buff them out for the most part. The second and third coats I applied with large a cotton mop, big pail, and mop ringer. This stuff drys in about a 1/2 hour being solvent based so I was able to apply all three coats today. It turned out pretty nice. I had the ugliest garage floor in 5 countys after the concrete finishers finished when the house was built. Their sealer sprayer wasn't working right and was spitting sealer out and it just looked like ****. Multi-colored shades of gray. But now it's all the same uniform color now.

Wow! looks great, I would think the edges and expansion joints woud look filled in and not as neat using a mop to aplly the product. What was the measurements og the floor and what was the cost of the product used to paint it? Again, nice work.

I plan on filling the expansion joints but, It"s going to have to wait. My son graduates from high school next week and I got too many irons in the fire. I was just glad I could get the floor done in time for the party. The total floor I did was 780 sq ft. At one time the garage was larger but the door behind my chair hides a storage room. I built the wall, drywalled, and installed the door last summer to make a "catch all room" The rental on the concrete grinder was $100 for all day, and I needed it all day. What a mess with the dust! The sealer total was $270 for 7 gallons. I figure on a recoat I only need 3 gals. The nice thing is if I want to recoat in 5 years all I have to do is clean the floor and re-mop the finish on. It's a Xylene based product so the next coat will activate with the original. I ended up with between a half and 3/4 gallon left over.

1. Did you put it on the vertical portion of the foundation walls next to the floor?

2. Did you run the sealer past the garage door to the end of the garage slab or end at the garage door?

3. Did you order from the manufacturer or pick up from a store?

Yes, I painted the block walls just below the walls. Later I'll find a color chart from the paint store and match the bottom plate and paint it and add some base trim the same color. At the opening of my door I have a 3/4 inch drop to a short section where my garage door seals, I stopped it there. Now that I know I have some left over I may seal out to the joint at the actual drive way. When the door is closed there is probably 6 inches showing. I'll decide later. I got the product from a local concrete supply house that sell other sealers, forms, stamping materials, etc. They got it from Butterfield,

I going to assume that the mop in the last pic ... is the mop you used ??? I would have never thought to use that kind of mop to apply a floor product ... but I will now !!!

No, Thats not the mop. Thats my dust mop I use on the floor for fine dust when I've been cutting wood. The mop I used to apply the sealer is a "commercial grade" type used in the janitorial trade. A glavanized 5 gallon bucket, wringer, and a cotton mop. Lucky I had a old one of these because they were pretty much trashed afterwards.

Where did you rent your floor grinder? I went to 2 Home Depot's yesterday with no luck. Today I'll try a few Joliet and Morris rental places. If I have to I'll rent one from your area.

I rented mine from "Awesome Machines" just South of Champaign in Savoy on Rt45. They rent larger stuff like backhoe's and such. Home Depots ok for your weekend warrior type stuff but you need to look at a true tool rental place. You should find a tool rental area in your area that can rent you a grinder.
