I have been searching high and low for a good anvil for quite some time, but yesterday I finally found MY ANVIL. how do I know? It was heavy, in reasonably good shape and it looks old. Where did I find it? In my very own subdivision where I live. How, you ask? I was talking to my neighbor across the street about looking for an anvil and he told me the guy he used to work for had one that belonged to his Dad. Well that Man also lives in our neighborhood. I told him that if it belonged to his dad he probably wouldn't want to sell it and he told me it don't cost nothing to ask. So yesterday I went by to ask and talk to the guy about the anvil at first he sail he didn't want to sell it but as we talked he seemed to at least be thinking about it, so I finally asked how much he would have to get out of it. Surprised me when he said 100$ I told him OK and gave him the money and told I would pick it up when I got some help. That was fine with him and in about an hour later I had the anvil in my garage. I started cleaning with a wire brush on a 4in grinder and uncovered what looks like it says hay budden and something I can't make out then there is stamped what I guess is the wt. .260 . I looked at the base under the horn and found A17532 stamped on the left foot of the base. does anyone know what I have? Is it what I think it is? Did I make a good Purchase? I have checked for sway on the top with a framing square and it looks good. There are a few places where it looks like someone tack welded something but just very little. The hardy hole is 1 1/4 square and the pritchel is 5/8

are you able to post a few good pictures of all sides and the top of your new anvil? also I've owned several anvils and the rust isn't necessarily a bad thing so I've never hit them with a wire brush or a grinder. Simple green is all I've used and maybe WD 40 on a rag if real rusty.

some of the guys hit the top with a belt sander to smooth out the nicks and keep the surface clean.

are you planning on using yours for hot or cold metal? hot is preferred and for cold you only need a hunk of RR track because the anvil will chip and loose some of the intended use if you bang on it with cold steel items.

good luck and for $100 it could be a very good deal depending on the welds and cracks. do you have a steel ball to bounce off the top to see if it rebounds nicely and give off that bell ring type sound?

My stinking phone camera has a dead battery so I will have to wait and see If I can figure out how to post a picture or 2. I know it was all 2 of us wanted to load tail gate high when I picked it up. I need to get measurements. No sway on top according to framing sq. Yeah and this thing was living less than a block away. Damn

Holy ****... I've been looking at used anvils for better than ten years, and not only is that the best price I've seen for anything CLOSE to that size, but that anvil is in the best condition I've ever seen one.

Damn... You need to put that on the mantle in your living room for a while and display it as a trophy.
(If it were me, I'd think about mounting it to the wall above the headboard of my bed, just for some "inspiration," if you know what I mean! )

That's quite a find! For all the other members out there looking, don't ever stop!!! There are stories I could share about my father and the anvils he purchased for pennies per pound. Some were so rare just mentioning the purchase price would make everybody smash their computers in frustration:lol:

Thanks, Guys I'm going to try to clean it up a little more and lightly grind off the tack welds that are one the face and horn and then the next project will be to try and build a brakedrum forge so that It will no longer be abused. I may have to make some blacksmith inspired trim work in my shop/garage combo. No parking allowed except h/ds

Sounds like the anvil found a good home.

again i think you know the answer to whether your $100 was well spent so would you PM me the next time you get a chance to buy one at that size and price since you don't need another.

Don't forget you will need a nice BIG chunk of log under that puppy to get it to a good working height for you!

I just happen to know a tree cutter that does a lot of work around here, I just need to let him know the size I need and I'm sure he can handle the stump for me. Also If I do run across another anvil I would be proud to let someone else join in on the fun, that we all seem to share :lol_hitti

After further cleaning I discovered what seems to be red enamel around the base, and dark bluish grey on the opposite side from the logo and weight marking. I am in the process of removing what look like tack welds on face and a couple small ones on the horn. I did have a steel ball bearing and it rebounds nicely and has a definite ring to it. Thanks everyone for your time.
