Well I have been planning and researching options for about 6 months now and finally pulled the trigger on my new shop/office for my used car lot. I was inspired by this site and particularly by a guy on here who built a replica vintage Texaco station/shop. I would like to give credit but can't seem to find the build thread.
I am not going quite as authentic as I originally planned but in spirit it will be inspired by an old Texaco station. I just signed a contract to have a 30x60 post frame building erected and I will finish the concrete, doors, and office myself. The building crew should be here in about 5-7 weeks to build. It will have 3 10x10 oh doors, 2 walk thru doors and 2 windows. The office will be aprox 14x30. My son is going to run a repair facility out of the 2 bays on the end. The other bay will be my detailing and minor repair space. One 2 post lift. I have attached a artist rendering of the building. It is not entirely accurate but close. The front garage door will be closer the office area than depicted.

That's correct! Mine will not be as authentic but the same Texaco color scheme and decorations such as red stars and retro lighting and lettering above the bays, old pump under the porch, etc. I planned on building something closer to Roger55's BUT I need to get it done quick and a post building is much quicker.

Me too! Based on your username I have to ask, do you have a 61 T-Bird? I had a 62 for years, finally sold it about 15 yrs ago. It was my daily driver in college in the 80's. We are practically neighbors, I am about 2.5 hrs from Knoxville.
I plan on posting a lot of progress pics as soon as they get started.

Yes, I have a 1961 Tbird. Black with red interior. It's been in my family since 1962. Right now it's in pieces in my attached 2-car garage for a full restoration. The project is kind of stalled right now because I have run out of room. Needless to say, a car in pieces takes up a whole lot of room. My focus right now is designing/planning a detached garage for the restoration of the Tbird and a few other projects. My current plan is also a 30x60, which is why I am very interested in your build. Are you planning on building it yourself? Post frame, metal? I intended to stick build mine with 2x6 walls 12' high but now I am having it built for me. I still will have a lot of work to do. Concrete, electrical, plumbing, doors, windows and finishing out an office. I enjoy building and this will give me plenty of "enjoyment". National Barn Co. is building it. The eastern division is located in TN. They had a great price and have been in business a long time and seem to be pretty large co. and pretty successful. I will be posting a lot when it starts and will be sharing my honest opinion on how satisfied I am with their work.

I'm like you - I like to build things too. I'm planning on 30x60 monolithic slab, stick-built frame, 12' 4 1/2" walls to accommodate a 2-post lift, with room-in-attic trusses for a second floor.

I would like to do most of it myself. Partly because I like to build, and partly because I can afford a larger garage if I do most of it myself. I do have second thoughts from time to time. It may cost more to have someone else build it, but at least they would come and knock it out quickly. As it stands right now, I will probably still be planning for another year because of job and family priorities.

However, I also enjoy the planning and the satisfaction of building something I planned. I have sure benefitted by look at a lot of awesome builds on this site. I was originally planning on the same overhead door arrangement as you - two on one gable end and one at the other end of one of the long walls. However, because of the way my building will sit relative to the house, I'm planning to have all the doors on one long wall; two 10x10 doors flanking an 18x10 door, with a man door at one end.

I think you are going a good route by letting someone else build yours since you are in a hurry. Like you said, there will still be plenty left for you to do after the building is erected. I will look forward to your build and experience. Good luck!

From my extensive and detailed research I can say that the stick built building of the same dimensions material only is about 3-4K less than the finished product with the post frame erected by a professional and finished off by me. If I was to stick build it I was going to sheet it and put vinyl siding on. If I would have paid someone to stick build it and do the whole job it would have been out of my budget.

I'm looking at that deal, too. I love building **** but know my time is worth something. If I work while hiring others to build, I can make money to pay them and my build goes up much faster. Also, I don't relish the idea of doing the roof.

We'll see, I guess...

I just checked out National Barn Company. It looks good. FYI - I've see some very nice Morton buildings on this site and they have an office in east TN.

Morton is a great company BUT you are correct, much more expensive. I grew up in Iowa and I believe they started in the midwest. There are a lot of Morton building in that part of the country. I researched National Barn and compared materials, warranty, etc. and they had the best building for the money in my opinion. I hope I end up being happy with their work. I was able to get them to throw in some options at no charge so that helped. They threw in the rat guard around the whole building and the drop shed porch at no charge. Saved me about $800. All I had to do was ask and they said yes.

Well I spoke to my builder today and got to discussing the ceiling clearance. The building has 12' exterior walls and I understand that the ceiling clearance is about 1' less so I ordered scissor trusses. Now I find out that the scissor trusses really don't add as much height as I had hoped. SOOOO they offered to add 1' to the walls for an additional $750, I am not excited of course to add to the budget BUT I think the price is fair and told them to go for it. I don't want to take a chance and regret it later since I MUST have clearance for a 2 post lift and without this change it would have been very close.

Have you looked into metal trusses?

Google 64 metals here in Ohio.

Yes, briefly. I am having the building built by a company that doesn't use them on their buildings. The problem is solved and it only cost $750 so I am satisfied. I think I will be gald I did later although the wallet took a little hit.:(

Not yet, they delivered the material today and their building crew will be here Mon. or Tues.. I am told it will only take about 3 days to complete. I will take plenty of pics of the build. I have inspected the material and it looks to be good top grade lumber.

Well it begins, the crew showed up to start building my 30x60. They had a very difficult time drilling the post holes. The foreman said it was the rockiest ground they have drilled in. The policy of the builder is that if they hit rock and it takes more than 5 minutes per hole they charge an additional $50 per hole. They finally got them all drilled and I suspect they will charge me for about 5-10 holes ($250-$500). They also hit an old sewer line and I had to call the city and ask if it was theres and they said no and that I could bust it up. It was old clay tile and I suspect it has not been in use for many years. the property has been developed for about 80 yrs. SO we busted it up and kept drilling.
