FINALLY got a bench grinder

Gotta love craigslist. It's a 1/3HP Craftsman model 397.19580. From the manual I found online it was built in 1963, so it has me beat by 18 years. I got lucky with the grinder being complete. Both eye shields, tool guides, spark arrestors & wheel guards are there. The light and stand were included too. That stand, oh man 1/4" plate and tubing and heavy as hell. The nice thing is the grinder is mounted to it on rubber grommets and there are rubber grommets on the bottom of the stand. Makes thing nice and smooth. All this awesomeness for $40.

Good job! I bought one almost identical off CL a few years back, and I love it. It really removes metal for 1/3 horsepower. The only problem with mine is when I shut it off, it keeps spinning for 2-3 minutes. I'd like to fix it "some day", but not a priority.

Now you need to keep an eye out for 1/2, 3/4 and 1HP versions so you can mount wire and buffing wheels!
I've got 2 - 1/3HP and a 1/2HP.

Yep, the legendary build quality of these grinders is what made me want one. The gauge of the copper in the motor winding has to be at least 14g. The new Chinese made grinders is easily 22-24g. Gotta love a quality built product, this grinder will definitely outlast me. And, I'm now looking for another one to have in the basement.

I have a 'new' Dayton that takes about 2 minutes to spin down, as well as vintage CM block grinders like yours that take up to 2-3 minutes to spin down also. 1 has had the bearings replaced.

I believe what you are seeing and wanting to "fix" is a sign of a well balanced grinder with good bearings.

Yep. I've always heard the longer it takes for a grinder to stop, the better quality it is.
