Finally got an Anvil

I know the Vulcan Anvils don't get much respect but I had to buy it anyway.
It looks to be in new condition and the price was $80 at a garage sale.
Having a cast bottom with a steel plate for the top gives it a bad reputation but after inspecting it I know its not a POS

There is a 67 on the base and my back tells me that's probably the weight.

At slightly over $1/lb that's a good deal for sure! I sold a nearly mint 70lb Vulcan for $325 not long ago...condition really means a lot with anvils.

It's not really the fact that is a cast bottom with a tool steel plate that gives Vulcan a bad reputation. Fisher anvils have a cast bottom and steel plate top and they're considered very high quality. The difference is Vulcan used a much thinner steel top plate and that made them more likely to chip/crack/etc.

A Vulcan is still a good quality anvil, it's just good to be aware you don't want to remove any face thickness because they really don't have any to spare.

You did steal it, what a price! Vulcan and Fisher anvils are great if you have neighbors nearby. That thwack sound they make is so much easier on the ears than a ringing Hay-Budden.

I have a 200lb Vulcan that I have been using for years for mostly ornamental iron work.
Has good rebound and I have no issues with it. Don't worry about the hot-shots and enjoy using it.

The 67 means something different than 67 pounds.
Look it up.
Fun stuff to know.

I found the number below the horn is 10. Multiply by 10 is 100 lbs.
I will guess on the 67, the date it was made 1967.
