So after a year of pondering on the subject, i finally dipped my hand in my pocket and got my door professionally insulated.
I was going to do it myself, but the cost of materials, and wanting it to look pro, i decided to let the people that installed the doors in the first place to carry out the job. And i was glad that they did, as it took them ALL DAY !! Being that i'm in SW Florida, these are hurricane doors, and all the beams had to come apart. Also the original screws were long so it wouldn't allow the installer to just slot the insulation in. it all had to be undone, then re-installed. Plus spring adjustment was something i wasn't comfortable with. All in all, cost was just over $500.. Which for taking an entire day of labor, i didn't think was that bad.
OK onto temps.... Using a temp gun, i measured the heat radiating off a non-insulated door... 118f I have a south facing garage and the sun beats on it all day. Yesterday was upper 70's, clear blue skies. low humidity.
Using a temp gun on an insulated panel, the temp was 87f So around a 30degrees saving radiating into my garage!!
Above the garage is just attic space and a roof, which i'm not sure if i should go further and put some insulation between the rafters. Heat rises, so i don't know if i should leave it as is, so that the heat can get out, or if i insulate the rafters up in the above attic, if it'll trap the heat in... One thing is i NEVER have to keep it warm.. Not here where i live, its never too cold in that garage !
Anyway ideas appreciated on the rafters, and also wanted to share the temp savings. As i struggled to find any info myself, before pulling the trigger.
