Finally have something to post about!!!

Well, the process is starting. After fighting through using my attached garage, I have started the process of a new detached shop/garage. It will be 30' wide 32' deep, and 18'-10" at the peak.
As you can see in the pics, its very hard to work in that mess.
I plan on a car lift, and putting up a mezzanine over the work bench area.

I removed enough of the old slab to pour the new footer for the front of the building. I am utilizing part of the existing slab for the shop and the other part for an apron in front of the shop. Prior to pouring the new slab, I will drill and epoxy rebar (every 18" around the perimeter) into the existing slab to "pin" it to the new slab.

Ocala, Florida, north of Tampa. The soil is mostly sand, with a bit of topsoil mixed in.

We are (fingers crossed) going to dig footers and form the slab today. Slab will be 4" thick with fiber, and we will put down some wire mesh as well to strengthen the area around the lift. Footers will be 16" wide, 14" thick with 2 #5 rebar running through the footer.

The building will be a metal building, but I will be building the end walls out of wood. The end walls face east and west, so I figured it best to build them out of wood so that I can insulate it better. This also allows for whatever door configuration I end up going with. Most likely I'll have carriage doors in the front.

I will definitely post pics as we make progress.

Well...... It has been a NON-productive day. My concrete guy never showed up, and never even called

So, since its a long weekend, Ill have the wife and kids out there with me tomorrow digging footers.

All the soil is fairly solid, and compacted already.
Do I have to compact the soil before I dig the footers? Or can I dig the footers and compact everything afterwards?

I had to go out of town for a few days, and while I was gone they managed to get the concrete poured. This is such a slow going process. The building is set to be installed the week of the 18th. Fingers crossed.

The roof and side walls will be prefabbed metal framed. (certified to 160 mph winds)
I will be building the end walls out of wood.

I am already worried that I am out of room. I started moving everything in (in my head of course) and I am not sure it will all fit. My biggest concern is where to put the lift, and how much space it will take up. I want enough room to have a "flat" bay as well. We will see how it all goes. Fingers crossed.

Well, its been quite an adventure. The county I live in tried pulling some **** about the structure not matching the drawings, and failed my inspection... The inspector straight up made up an excuse to fail me!!! In his official failure report, he stated that the drawings say that the bottom rail has to be 6" away from the edge of the slab. He completely made that information up, and failed me for it. The drawing have NO such dimension. Talk about mad, I was fuming mad. So I went to the permit office, and had to deal with their BS, but I finally got my building passed today. They made me get a letter from the architect, saying that he approved the installation. Needless to say, he had a few choice words for them, since they obviously dont know how to read drawings.
I'm very worried that a county official would bold face lie like that. I suppose it was to get another inspection fee. Its really ashame they do this kinda ****. This is why people build stuff without pulling permits.

Well, I will be moving forward this weekend (hopefully) and keep you all updated.

Made a little bit of progress today. Go the rear wall framed. This was quite interesting as my nail gun busted a seal, so I had to finish nailing everything by hand. Then, as I was getting excited to see the wall was gonna be up today, my damn come-a-long has a busted cable.. I guess it was a sign to give up for the day, and get back to it tomorrow. The last pic is just for a perspective of the size. Any larger would be obnoxious on my property. Later on I plan on framing up some faux windows on the outside so that it looks more like a barn, and not so much like a shop...

Any plans for loft build on the far end to get benefit of that 18 ft height ??

Finally what tie-in requirements do you have for the wood walls with metal ?? I'm guessing that you have "hurricane-wind" requirements in Florida.

P.S. That trailer is sweet . . . is that aluminum or steel ??

The rafters are 5'-0" max. That's how the building was engineered, so I guess it'll be alright. I would have thought 4'-0" max, but I'm not an engineer.

I plan on building a 15' or 16' square mezzanine in the right rear corner of the building. Depending on finances, I might go 16' wide, the full length of the building.

I am not sure of the "official" tie in of the metal to wood. I will most likely bolt the wood to the metal with 3/8" galvanized bolts.

The trailer is steel. I built it a few months ago. I just posted some more pics of it in the "welding projects" thread.

Here is some progress from the weekend. Got the rear wall completely done. Got the roof kool sealed (1) coat, and got the posts for the doors set in their holes. I have not "set" the columns yet, still need to plumb, and pour concrete. I also got the old shed moved to the other side of the yard, but I don't have a pic of that...

I ended up using 2 1/2" long self tapping screws to attach the wood to the face of the metal post. I spaced them every 2'-0". I think that will be enough. They are tight , so I don't think Ill have any issues in the future.

Didn't accomplish much visually, but I feel the is was a huge milestone. Really makes it feel like its coming together. I got the main header built and installed, with help from my wife and daughters!!!

Posts were core drilled, and grouted in place, along with some wedge anchors for extra security. Pickup up all 16' lumber (last minute decision on my way home from work). Got a coat of paint on the bottom side of the vertical 2x's, still gotta paint the rest. Just wanted to get the header into place before I lost daylight. Now I can finish framing in the walls, build and cover the doors, and then start to move all my stuff in. I can't wait, the poor house in a mess while this project is going on.

Also decided while the shop was fairly empty, I would put up a mezzanine with some extra steel we had laying around the shop. Also had to start moving some things in the shop to make room in the garage.

Had the first project in the shop too. Battery died, so I replaced it with a lawn and garden battery. Almost double the speed, and lasts all day long!!!
I would have not picked a mustang, but the neighbors gave it to us, and she loves it, so that's all that matters.
