Finally moving forward

I put down a deposit today for my shop build. Build thread to follow when things start moving forward. It is going to be a 32x44. I am currently thinking through the electrical needs. My plan is to run a 100 subpanel off the main house panel. Currently has a 150 amp main, but will be upgraded to a 200amp. All of my appliances are gas minus the heater.

I plan on having a/c, possibly a 36,000BTU mini split. My worst case will be using my plasma cutter while the a/c is running and the air compressor kicks on. Doing a quick calculation, figuring 32 amps for the compressor while running (7.5hp, not 100% on brand yet), 18 amps for the plasma per hypertherms information, and 28 amps for the a/c, I come up with a total of 18,960 watts or 79 amps.

My math seems to indicate that I will be fine but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. It will only be me out there, lights will be LED, so no real potential for any other large amp draws other than my "worst case".

Thoughts?

A 90a feeder (using #2 aluminum, assuming the distance is about 100' or less) will serve that fine.

Do you need to replace the main panel anyway? Going from a 150 to 200 won't really increase your capacity as your poco almost certainly won't be changing the feeder from the pole

The feeder from the pole and subsequently from the meter to the panel is 200 amp, the main breaker is 150. Only the main breaker is being replaced not the whole panel.

Do you need to tell the PoCo about the change, so they can upgrade their equipment if needed? In my part of CA you need to give them an electricians' load calc for the project and the building permit, then they tell you how much it's going to cost.

I am not sure if the poco will be notified. According to the electrical contractor doing the work the existing wiring is sufficient for the upgrade. I am not sure if they plan on just pulling the meter briefly to install the new main or having the PoCo shut it off.

Just a FYI, if you have a smart meter, don't let it get done without notifying the PoCo. They'll know instantly and will send a truck out. But the electrician will (should) know this
