Classic 58?

Strictlytoolboxes.com has some nice boxes I'm told. For not much more you can have a very nice USA made Proto box, or of course watch Craigslist for a nice box.

I vote Proto, just b/c they look to be extremely nice for the money, Although I suppose you won't be sorry buying a Snap On, I just can't get over the price.

This seems to be one of the dilemmas that this site causes. The first is buying more tools, the side result is needing a larger box to keep them in. Stick around and sooner or later, you'll need a bigger box.

Ive got a Masterforce box from Menards......had it for years. Its very well made and honestly I think it would hold up to pro shop use. Its an option, if you have a Menards nearby.

if your a pro the kra 2422 is a great box and a great deal. I loved its layout and the 2 full length drawers make for a lot of floor space. It generally goes on special 3 or 4 times a year so it can be found new at nice prices or check with your driver on a used trade in box. When I traded in my kra 2422 it was still like new as I outgrew it quick (or my spending outgrew it quick).

I still can't say enough good things about my Montezuma and Tool Vault stuff from STB.com. Great guys. Another guy in our northern shop bought an Extreme tools toolbox from them as well, and it was very nice. All in all, I think 5 of our shops boxes came from them. Good customer service, genuine guys who like their work.

I'd at least look at Montezuma, Homak, and Extreme, all offer good quality and good price. I will continue expanding my 72x30 box until it suits me, but its everything I need currently. And I got lucky and snagged a green one.

I'm thinking of going to two boxes, moving out all the SAE stuff to its own smaller box or chest, and moving all my specialty tools like trim tools to a portable toolbox.

Get a masterforce 72 with stainless top from menards. 3 long drawers. Awesome box. Had mine for 2 years now. The latches are the new style lift ones instead of detent. Good box for 1500 bucks. Holds all my junk well

My rollaway base and top cabinets are mostly a mix of Craftsman and Kennedy; some are decades old. The Kennedy's are worth the extra $. One new HF top cabinet is impressive, for the $. But if you can afford SO, I'd still watch for a good price on a lightly used one.

Instead of trading your box, how about adding to it?

Some food for thought ......... if you are a pro and you purchase a Snap-on box, you'll always be able to trade up or sell at a higher premium than other brands.

Is this box for home or work? I'll always be an advocate for a top tier box at work. Albeit matco or snappy. Constant in and out, reliable locks and good customer service. I've played with the harbor freight 44 and while it's nice when it's new, if it gets beat on it gets worn out. I would use one at home, but not at work.

My work box is a classic 78, it hold everything I need to do whatever I need to do. My home boxes are a 68 epiq the 41" craftsman and a few older snap on boxes from around the 50's.

I ran with the 41 craftsman at work for years until I was tired of the limited space and the crappy locks that I needed several different keys for. I replaced that with the epiq, then changed jobs and left them both at home and brought the 78 to my new job.

Despite all the people who think a box is a box, think of a tool box as a safe. It is a tool, it is storage and it is mean to keep everything safe and protected. I'm not about to leave 10's of thousands worth of tools in a box that cost a small fraction of that just to save money. I save money everytime a tool isn't stolen due to a crappy lock design.

There's always plenty of used boxes out there for fractions of the cost new. Be patient, do research and play around with boxes that have seen the use and abuse that would be on par with what you plan on doing with yours. An *** for every seat and a box for every tool.
