I wish I could!!!

I was told that it could not be altered due to California Code. I actually did alter it a little bit (hopefully they won't notice on inspection day) because it was just plain NASTY! It is my biggest complaint of the whole project. They won't even let me paint the metal part out to match so it would "go away" a little bit, but I plan on having it painted as soon as the inspection is done. I did have the painter paint the Asbestos portion of it already. It really pisses me off sometimes because it seems to draw my eyes to it whenever I walk into the garage.

why dont you get rid of that ugly Eye sore and go with a tankless hot water heater?, they fit right on the wall and is very small.

Nah... I did that in one of my other homes, and I don't like it. I have huge showers with between 7-10 shower heads. Those tankless units seem to be better for regular showers. It always seems like the water is colder and won't keep up with the demand.

I'm as bright as I look in the picture above.
Awesome build, thanks for sharing!

I actually have that same compressor and have never seen someone take the tank off it. I've started planning for the power and air cord reels like you have.

It comes at an awesome time for me to stuble upon this thread, I just build the garage below and am working on the interior "planning" now, before the drywall and such goes up. I've already run some Cat6, cable, and speaker wires, but now I need to get back to the drawing board!

What a special place. Certainly not everyone's taste, but it's yours and you did a spectacular job in the execution. The cars are spectacular too - what kind of things do you do on your rides when on the lift?

Also, is your vice just sitting on the tool cart? It looks bolted down but see it's backwards, so it can't be!

Thanks for sharing it all!

BTW - I also squeegee the shower doors!! (That coating doesn't seem to help much.)

Thank you for the kind words. All I do to my cars is clean them in between the "real" details they get from the pros. Gives me something to do. Yes, the vice is bolted down and is mounted properly for me. I guess either I'm "different"..or the pic is backwards!?!?!?

Everything looks very nice and the attention to detail is astonishing.
The cars are incredible also.
The only thing wrong is that the garage looks too pretty to use for other things than parking cars.
For example, the flat screen tv which is so close to the workbench. If you would actually use the workbench, there would be a great risk of damaging the tv.
Anyway, this is just an opinion, please don't feel offended.
The ideea with the sliding doors is very practicle and gives a very minimalist design to the garage.
You have good taste!

I'm speechless. What an outstanding garage. As a concert audio engineer with a background in studio work and a dabble in Crestron automation programming - my hat goes off to your design of the house. Truly a work of art.

Thank you sir.

Ah... Reading, MA. I got lost there once.

While attending Berklee some of my new "friends" thought it would be funny to put me on a train to Reading and tell me it was going somewhere else. GOOD TIMES!

Sorry I am new but have a question. First Garage and House are beautiful, nice work. I am wondering where you got the desert gold slate you have, I have been looking for a supplier of that and can't find anyone

Bhr4ce1,

Very nice garage remodel, lots of well placed and organized details.

Quick question as I am planning my garage adventure now and also unfortunately only have a "two car" garage that I have to make the most out of in order to get a lift in there. What are the dimensions you eventually had left over side to side after your side wall sliding doors were installed? I am trying to see how much if any of the sides of the garage I can use and still comfortably fit two cars.

Also, do you think the cutout for the bendpak will collect fluids, dirt, etc and be a challenge to keeping clean? You mentioned that you wash your cars outside but I would think there is still a good chance something will spill down there. Did you take any consideration to the ability to keep the bendpak channel clean and did you make any accommodations for cleaning down there? maybe I am just worrying about nothing and you have to live with the fact that it will be grimey down in the Bendpak cutout.

thanks,

Larry

I designed the "usable" garage width to be 3 inches wider than the actual door opening. I used the rest of the depth for the storage areas. It works out great for me that way. I have 4 cars, and two 2-car garages. I can fit any two of them in each garage with no problem. The secret is to back one in and drive one in straight. That way the drivers doors can open wide in the center without hitting the other car, plus have TONS of walking room in-between.

As far as dirt in the lift area goes, I have not had any problems. I have an air hose to blow out dust/leaves/etc. Granted, I am in Southern California, and we never get much rain here, so it doesn't get very dirty. My housekeeper does put the lift up once in a while and mops the areas under the lift if it gets really dusty.

If you check out the current issue of Garage Style magazine, they have a good pic of my garage with the lift in the fully extended position without a car on it so you can see what the area under the lift looks like.

Thanks for those pictures showing how much room there is side to side. Based on the size of the garage door, seems to me you ended up with 16 feet of space in between the side sliding doors? I have too many things in the garage right now to be able to test this with two cars so I have to go by dimensions in my planning right now.

thanks,

Larry

Had a film crew here last week. Four of the nicest and most patient people ever! They were shooting my garage for a new show called "Ultimate Garages" on MAVTV. It's supposed to air sometime in January. Quite a lengthy procedure. They brought tons of gear too. These pics were just from a small part of the shoot they did to interview me. I never got any shots of the huge equipment they used in my garage, but it was quite a production. I am looking forward to seeing how it comes out...except for the part where I had to talk about my garage. YIKES! I don't like that stuff!

Just stumbled into here. Awesome, absolutely awesome. Looks like your garage is gonna be famous again. I caught that you were a musician way back in the thread and had been wondering who and what. Now I see the baby grand so I know what....
Thanks for all the detailed posting, a very enjoyable read.

Thanks. The garage has been in a few magazines, but I am looking forward to seeing this new show in January. I just hope my concert grand didn't hear you call him a baby grand. LOL!

I actually got rid of that compressor. It was just too loud. I had them install one by California Air Tools. It's it hard to believe how quiet it is. I mean seriously...I can stand right next to it and carry on a soft conversation. The sound it makes is barely noticeable when it is running. I could never own a loud compressor again.

I am new to this site and wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your project. I am in the early stages of planning to build a new garage with a home and your project gives me some great ideas. I had been thinking I would go with a two post lift but after seeing what you have done with a scissor lift recessed into the floor it is clear that is the best option for me. I am also OCD and have a passion for contemporary homes so I might borrow some ideas from your house also. Thanks again, Tom

Wow... Just wow! I'm looking for more of a workspace, but am planning to use a lot of similar ideas to make use of my limited space (in ground scissor lift, sliding doors on cabinets). Amazing space, well planned out and executed. Well done.
