Finally started my garage project.

For a few years now, I've wanted a space where I could fiddle around with detailing my cars in between the "real" details they get from the pros. Luckily I know some professional detailers that can "fix" any the bad things I do to them. I have two 2-car garages, so I decided to turn one of them into a "detail" space for when I am feeling so inclined. I've learned quite a few things from reading the pages of this wonderful forum, and I have even sent various threads to my contractor at times. Hopefully this will help us avoid a lot of mistakes.

I'm into electronics and gadgets big time, so there will be some cool features in this garage as the build goes on. They started ripping apart the garage a few weeks ago, and I have been trying to snap a few pics every couple of days to track the progress. Here is the first batch.

I'm having a lot of stuff installed that will need electricity... audio/video, automation, HVAC, beverage center, tons of lighting, cord reels, hidden compressors, central vacuum, WiFi, etc installed. There will also be sensors that will turn on overhead cameras output to a 55" monitor on the wall when I open the garage door to help me with a birds-eye view of my car so I can position it on the lift properly. Kind of a hi-tech version of the tennis ball on a string.

The automation will monitor the garage door and will close it if it doesn't detect motion for a programmed amount of time so I don't accidentally leave it open. There are also sensor for the water features and heaters in the adjacent courtyard and I can operate all functions including deadbolts and garage doors, HVAC controls, lighting, water features, gas heaters, audio/video, AppleTV, etc from my iPhone no matter where I am. It will be very cool when it is done.

That's what I need, left my door open all night many times, good thing is a good neighborhood out in the boonies!!

That's just absolutely awesome. This'll be one for the books. That's why I like this site so much--it's got everything from vintage 30's garages to that clinically beautiful far east number to some ultra-high-tech job being built now!

Here's a few more shots from yesterday... Most shots were taken in the garage except the two taller server racks which are in my server room. As far as digital storage goes, I now have a total of 80 TB. about 10 TB of that is used for NAS backups of all systems, and then the remaining 70 TB is set up in RAID10 for movie storage for my home theater with the Kaleidescape system as the main GUI. These sources are also tied into every room in the house...including the bathrooms and the garage so I can watch any source in any room at any time. Sources include 19 security cameras, multiple blue-ray players, fios boxes, as well as any media on any of the 7 iMacs located throughout the house. Control4 makes sure everything plays nice together, and does a FLAWLESS job. The house is so automatic that I don't really ever have to remember to turn anything on or off. There are also touch screens with built in intercoms in every room.

I love automation, but I never really considered using it in the garage.

I have been planning a remote access CCTV system to show the outside of the doors and windows, and one inside covering the parking area, but my wife thinks that although I may worry less when on holiday, she feels that I will spend too much time looking at my iPhone when I should be on holiday!

Shame you dumped those cabinets - I thought it was a 'half way' photo rather than a 'before' photo!

I love automation, but I never really considered using it in the garage.

Well, since this is my first lift...I want to make sure that I pull on to it properly. One of the automation processes that will occur is when I hit the button to open the garage door. The sensors will tell Control4 to turn on certain overhead lighting...turn on the 55" monitor and the overhead camera. The camera will send an image (1080p) directly to the monitor so I can get a birds-ey view of me driving in to the garage. It will just make things easier.

Automation will also turn off the HVAC system if the garage door is inadvertently left open.

Trust me. I am so attached to my iPhone that I think I might need to seek professional help. It does everything for me. I can control every aspect of my home automation system from it no matter where in the world I am. I can watch my gardener on the cameras, get notification of and monitor packages that were delivered, alter the temperature in 11 multi-zones throughout the home, lock and unlock deadbolts, open and close blinds, verify that the security system is operating properly...just to name a few. The Control4 system has really changed my life. It's great to be able to turn up the Jacuzzi on my way home so it is piping hot when I get there.

Automation is not something for lazy people. It is just a way to simplify your life. It's great that the system "knows" to close the blinds in a particular room when the TV is turned on IF it is before sunset. It also closes blinds in rooms with West facing windows at certain times so I don't have to remember to do it. It raises them all back up at sunset.Little things like that are wonderful.

Instead of waking up to an annoying alarm clock...the lighting in my bedroom slowly ramps up to a very bright level, the blinds raise, music plays through the speakers and gets increasingly louder. The temperature also changes to match my preferences for getting ready in the morning.

I can also set certain announcements to play in certain rooms at certain times. For instance, if I have friends staying in the guest house...I can set announcements to let them know that breakfast will be ready at a certain time.

All my outdoor lighting is set forever. No more having to re-do timers when daylight savings time occurs. All exterior lighting is based on latitude/longitude and sunrise/sunset times. It adjusts itself everyday so I don't have to even think about it. It knows to start the courtyard gas heaters in the morning if the outside temperature is below 60 so having your morning coffee outside is more pleasurable. It "knows" to turn on all the water features when the spa maintenance guy enters his gate code to service all the water features around the home.

Home automation is becoming more affordable. It is not just for convenience anymore...it also helps to save energy.
