Two days ago I pulled permits to start the build and it rains the following day. Has not really rained for 6 months. So at least I can move the dirt, was hard and dry. Moved to this place 6 months ago and no shop.:(

I have been renting a 40' ocean container and really tired of it so can't wait to start. Need to do a little dirt work first. So pulled permit for that. The permit process and design company has now consumed 10 weeks, at least it's done. Then applied for Cal Fire permit and this could take 4-6 weeks. I live in the county and a water tank is required. I have one for the house but now may be too close to shop build! Will meet Cal in 2 days. Likely able to defer Cal Fire for now but only up to the point framing is done and ready for comp roof.

Will start to post pictures very soon. As mentioned it is a 4 car garage about 1,144 square feet. Will have cement floor with stem wall, and use James Hardi siding, for fire reasons. I have a contractor for most of the work but with a electrician in the family we will handle that. Rain started again just as I was going to do the dirt work today so waiting again!

Met with Cal Fire today and was told by their fire protection engineer that he was fine with the 3k water tank and hydrant location, better if I moved the hydrant location but will approve as per the plans to remain in same location. Tank was already in for the house but I am building about 10' away. Saved me time and $$$$$$$:rocker: Official permit will come in a month but ok to start. Working on my pics still.

Weather permitting I will move dirt today! Pictures of site and basic plan. The build will be situated between the main house and the guest house.

Looks like a fun build. Have you built before? Sounds like you have a grip on the situation. Couldn't read the prints of the LxWxH. Can't wait to follow. Mike

Got it wrapped up before the next round of rain and strong wind came in. Included a couple of pics of the code requirements here which I don't really understand the need for. But who am I to argue with engineering!

We never get hurricane or tornado incidents, once in a while you might see a little something in the sky that sort of looks like one but extremely rare to touch down. We are not in earthquake fault zone but can on rare occasion get a little shake. I guess this is just another Cali thing, shear wall and hold downs.

Have been busy but wanted to add more pictures as we go. Almost finished the roof today. The walls are 2x6 and trusses 2x4 engineered. I also have a windmill project that is in progress.

Slow but surely moving along. Got the roof completed, windows, and siding almost. Ran short of Hardee factory painted siding. :mad:Using Hardee lap in the front. Started on the electrical inside and digging for wiring, no room for trencher so hand dig.:wtf: Using 100 amp breaker panel, will have special outlet outside for welding and far corner for compressor.

Moving right along. Got all the doors on except the walk in one. Needed siding came in and almost all trim now done. Got trench dug and conduit down. Passed initial electrical inspection with county. Working on more outlets inside and need to pull wire from house main panel to shop next week. Painting second coat on trim and fascia to cover nails.
In my spare time hah, working on the 8'windmill project. I restored the Aermotor and now building the tower. Using redwood as metal towers are hard to find and expensive.

Have installed my LED exterior lighting as we now have power to the shop. Motion sensor light above walk in door. Still have to put interior lights up. Had sheet rock guys in over the weekend, boy are they a messy group. I thought the cement people were but holy cow. Spent time cleaning up after they left!

Ran into a good price on 5 hp 80 gal Ingersol Rand compressor so had to get it even though not ready to move in yet. Still need to paint and install lights.

Not hurricane.....earthquake....you should see the Simpson brackets I had to do for my house addition...one of them was about 2' long with about 100 screws....and a 1" all thread rod going to a metal plate sunk into a 3x3x3 pad at the corner of the house. If we have the 'big one', my house will be the only one standing.

Nice build....even though I'm a little late to the game. I like how you made it look like more than just a box.

Thanks dawg, yes the little kick up in the front was really a late design change so it didn't look like a box.
I also should mention that I put in some black pipe air lines in a couple walls as the compressor will be back in the far corner. I wanted to reduce some of the hose clutter on the floor.
Also got the rain gutters on before any big rain stains the exterior finish.:)

So I have installed my interior lights, 12 Lithonia T-8 with twin LED tubes. I have painted the walls and also installed my base boards inside. Bolted the new compressor down, went better than I thought it would. Also, I got my weather vane installed which means we're almost done with the build. A lot of cement work remains out front but will be a few weeks off.

So I thought at this point I could get a final signed off from Cal Fire and the County, nope.
The County is now shut down and so is Cal Fire inspections! Will call tomorrow and if I hear it will be another 2 weeks or longer too bad I am moving into the shop!

So I got the county to come out and do their final field inspection, I passed, but not officially done till Cal Fire comes out to approve. Likely next week Cal said. Was told I could start moving in some items out of my on site rental storage container.

Then while taking out the last item, a large piece of steel railroad track it happened. It fell on my big toe and totally ripped off the nail. Now 6 hours later still bleeding some, and pain. At least the build is done but moving my equipment in from another building is on hold for a while.

So after a little break and working on other projects I finally selected a cement contractor. We poured 3 trucks yesterday and will do another 3 next weekend. All went well and can't wait to finish up. I love the cement for sure. Going to be 106 degrees next week or higher so not good cement weather, likely cooler by Saturday. Also got the windmill up and running.:bounce:

So 3 1/2 trucks later the driveway and access entry are about poured as of yesterday. We used a total of 6 1/2 trucks for all with 2 week delay between pours. Really nice to get rid of the **** dirt that is mud in the winter and dust in the summer. :bounce:

The whole build with the permit process here in crazy Cali, construction, covid-19 and cement pour took about 10 months. For the most part went really well and a good shop. Will show more inside later after things get put away. Waiting for my NewAge shop cabinets to come now. :)

Yes I did get a small frig as cold fluids are always a need. Has already been 107 degrees here already! Surprise to get a call from the shipping company that my NewAge cabinets are to arrive today!! Great as I still have a lot of things in boxes and can't find half of what I want at times. Inside shop photos coming soon as I get things put away and figure out the Feng Shui.:lol2:
