I ended up grabbing the 4 row since it is only $40 difference. Once I realized tax is included I wasn't really paying more then I was expecting for the 2 row. It's a 56 cutter head and they include 4 extra. They also don't make you take off all the cutters like all the others.

One thing that is odd is they have a no bearing option, but it obviously includes bearings.

Looks like a nightmare to adjust and set up to me. It'll certainly do a very nice job, I'm sure, but I wonder about the adjustments.
From what I've seen on similar heads, there's no adjustment. Each insert is fully located so all you have to (or can) do is remove and rotate them. Granted, if there's something screwy with the machining you don't have any adjustment ability, but as long as your head isn't defective it should be less fiddly than knives.

that looks like a great price compared to others I've seen. I'd be interested if I were doing more planeing. As it is, I haven't even run a board through my brand new DW736 since other life things have taken all my time

Yeah the price is great... $279 shipped after $20 coupon. The edge is angled to fit the side of the cutter and keep it seated correctly. My main worry is keeping the screws tight, yet also easy to remove when needed.

Ah, OK. Should work OK, then. Maybe less chattering. I don't have a planer any longer.

I've considered getting one for my DW735X. The standard blades don't stay sharp for long before I notice it slow down and have some tearout and replacing them at ~$55 a pop definitely has had me thinking about the helix's carbide cutters more than a few times.

Please let us know how it works on various types of wood once you get that all set up. I'm curious how you think it compares in noise, speed, finish and how often it trips the thermal overload. Especially with it being a 4 row I suspect that might become a fairly common issue if you are using it all that much.

Also, if it's full size, meaning you have to install without all of the carbide cutters on it so have to install them after, how many cutters does the 4 row take and how long was that process to you?

I'm not familiar with that brand as I have Byrd Shelix heads in my 8" jointer and 15" planer. I find it odd that the inserts aren't per-installed. Is that specific to a Dewalt planer?

Just a note that the Byrd uses Torx Plus screws with a very specific torque setting or the inserts are prone to cracking.

Other than that, helical heads rock over knives! The (relative) quietness over knives is surprising, not to mention the knife setting aggravation.

With the Dewalt 735 planers at least, the inserts won't clear the bearing holes so the inserts have to be installed last. One company offers a slightly undersized option to install with inserts but that has some mismatch to the rollers that can be a problem.

My friend and them on his planer & joiner. I don't think you could pry them out of his dead cold hands. They work very nice quite and cuts easy.
