So i don't use my compressor much and currently have 60 gallon 2 stage. It is oiled but LOUD. I have a loft in part of my garage and would like to relocate it to the loft, looking for something quiet and don't think i really need the 60 gallon two stage, any thoughts?

I have a Champion 60 gallon, 2 stage from TP Tool. Turns at 806 rpm and you can carry on a conversation next to it as its running. Pretty quite in my book.

This topic has been discussed repeatedly (take your pick - loud compressor, mounting in loft, etc) - have you searched?

Most common answer: build a lean-to and move the compressor outside. Also, add an intake muffler and/or use a remote air intake.

Look into a twin screw type compressor, we use one at the dealership and it sounds about like the A/C running in the house and it builds air really quick. I have the same issue, I want a quiet compressor they're more $$ though. The compressor I have at the shop at home is so loud I cant hear myself think.

Mine is an 80 gallon Champion from TP Tools. Like yours, mine is pretty damn quiet. It's just a soft chuggle sound rather than the typical frantic sound the faster turning machines make.

I located mine in the basement and ran 3/4" copper up the wall then into the garage. All I hear is a sort of loose rattling when it's running, both upstairs in the house or garage. Half way up the wall in the basement I put in a QD so I have air down there if I need it. I had the room to spare in the basement. On the other hand I wouldn't hesitate to put one up in the roof trusses if I was hard up for space or something like mine wasn't feasible.

I have the husky version from Home Depot of the California air above and it is amazingly quiet. About the same as a box fan on low/medium.

Refrigeration compressors can be repurposed as air compressors, they are no more noisy than a refrigerator, but what you gain in quiet you lose in volume.

so i dont have many air tools to run, i have the garage plumbed for air already. I have a big 60 gallon 2 stage compressor that is oiled and it is just plain loud. Drives you nuts. Would the smaller compressor work okay if i plumbed in a larger "storage tank" with it. I have an extra tank that is a 40 gallon that the pump blew up on.

Just me but there are times you need the extra HP of a stationary compressor and other times you need something portable that can be hand carried. It sounded like you didn't like the noise of the stationary compressor, not the space it takes up. Simple idea, plumb the mini compressor as a tee into the big tank. Each compressor can still use its own pressure switch, you decide which one fills the tank depending on which one (or both) that you enable. I'd keep the small compressor on something easy to disconnect like a classic quick connect or a JIC swivel fitting for when you want to go on the road with it.

i like the outside idea, but in my neighborhood that would never fly

Yupp, I've been trying to come up with a good way to hide mine outside also... I should really switch to a horizontal 60 gal tank, instead of my upright..Then buy a cheap garbage can style shed....

For most tools, YES !

Adding a bigger tank does NOT work for tools that run continuously for long periods of time (grinder, sand blaster, sanders and some spray paint guns).

I have a 10 gallon California Air Tools compressor and it is unbelievably quiet. I plan on plumbing in another tank for storage. If you do a lot of grinding or painting, you would need a much bigger compressor. It suites my needs for light tasks like installing wood trim and filling up tires. They fluctuate in price a lot on Amazon. I would hold off until Black Friday. I bought mine in April for $329 shipped.

just put the compressor in the kitchen so you can't hear your wife nagging you and that way the garage will be peace full and quiet #winwin

Outside in an insulated shack is the only way to go.

Yep. Looks like a CAT-4610A
HD sells the 4610a on their website for $259. Was the Husky version any cheaper? I'm interested in one of these CAT 60db compressors for when my old craftsman finally dies.

I got a STEAL on a 4620A that was damaged in transit from Amazon. Bigger motor, more CFM than the 4610A (and heavier).

I like that cooler you made there. Simple too. How well does it keep the water down when you are say sandblasting or other high draw use?:thumbup:

I've got no water getting into my sand. I have a seperator, then a harbor freight refrigerated dryer, then 50ft hose and a motor guard plasma filter, and the 130# pot.

Searched the world(my part) over for a compressor that I could afford, have adequate cfm and be reasonably quiet. Picked up this 1980 Dayton Speedaire(Chicago made), 5hp/230v/single phase/1725rpm, Dayton/Champion massive pump 800 rpm/17cfm/175psi, came with the mag starter new breaker shutoff switch, couple of ball valves , dessicant filters. $480.00 plus rented a truck with a lift gate because it weighed more than a Samoan linebacker and his mother. Have a 500# rated hand crank winch lift that it duly tested with 3 guys on it. But yeah you can listen to the game in the shop on a little AM radio while it chugs along.

Now that is an awesome deal!
