makgreens,

Call "The Steel Store" in Chattanooga. They are located at 2340 Chestnut St. and the number is 423-265-4246. A lot of people call us trying to find them because they are listed in the phone book under the "T's" for "The".

They specialize in very small quantities of steel to the general public. You can also make a buy from a local fabricator if all else fails. Shoot me a PM and I can let you know who to call (I'm in Rossville).

I use SpeedyMetals and OnlineMetals.com for small purchases of metal.
Both cut to length and stock just about anything you need.

Some awesome suggestions here - I am buying metal this month for a rotisserie and will check with a couple machine shops.

I'm not in a large metro area, but do have a good metal supplier near by, that is a local welding shop. I've almost allways been able to find any thing I needed. If you have a local welding shop, stop in and check them out, they might turn out to be your best source .

Pacific Steel and Recycling is my first choice, otherwise onlinemetals.com is pretty good for custom non-steel stuff.

Not even close to where you are, but this thread could turn into a good resource for people searching the forum.

I get my metal from Competitive Metals in El Cajon, CA. For anyone in the San Diego area, they have great prices, and the guys that work there are great. Industrial Metal Supply is another option, but in my experience they have higher prices, and I liked the service at Competitive much better.

I have a good relationship with one of my local machine and fab shops. I get my steel for 1% over his cost and lots of advice that is always worth more than I pay for it, unlike most.

Im looking at speedy metals right now, and their prices, not even including shipping, are at least 10% MORE than what I pay at my local machine shop. :headscrat

Most of the online short metals suppliers are OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive!

Check out your local steel supplier. Not only will he be less expensive, but you won't have to wait for it in most cases. Any good supplier will sell by the foot at just a bit above full-length prices.

Many times, stuff on the "drop bin" or "drop rack" will be heavily discounted.

We have a couple of metal recyclers that have "retail" sales sections.

They usually have a huge selection in new and/or used available and sell by the pound. So far the prices have been the lowest in town.

There is also a fabricator located about 1/2 mile from there... If you are talking about the one near 23rd and Rossville Blvd. (the scrap yard that is...) that you might be able to buy drops from. There is another near the National Guard Amory that might sell there drops for slightly above scrap prices.
