Finding Old Craftsman Lock Replacement

I'm trying to find locks to replace the two on my craftsman roll cart and top chest. The locks that were in there were really beat up, and the keys barely turned. I bought the 26" set sears sells new, but it didn't fit. Strangely enough the lock that was meant for the bottom box worked fine in my top box though. I then ordered the 26" set on their site, which looked like a different set and what I needed, but they sent me the same set I returned the first time.

Seems like they don't make the three lock set, and only sell a 4 lock set that has the same part number. I can't find the model number of my top box though, only found the date of 1976. I dug around on the sears parts site and it seems like all the vintage 26" boxes use the same lock though? I found a replacement for the bottom lock (the smaller one) but want to make sure I have the right top lock.

I bought a replacement lock and cylinder from this eBay seller recently to replace a missing lock on a Snap-On tool chest - he is a locksmith and probably can help you out.

Most of these types of locks can be had at any locksmith...some hardware stores or RV supply houses. Snap-on doesn't make these..they are used on thousands of applications..tool boxes, camper shells, display cabinets, some vending machines, store displays...etc etc. Just take the lock with you and you might be able to match it up locally or you can try the internet. In most applications the locking tab can even be reused on the new lock as long as the lock is the right length, fits and the tab is held onto the end with a nut. Because sometimes you can find the right lock that fits but the locking tab is different. Just take the one off your old lock and put it om the new lock....assuming its held on the same as the old lock. In most cases buying from the manufacturer will cost you more but it will be sure to fit and easier.....just depends on if you want to save a few bucks.

ALSO.....if the lock is intact and just needs a key or the locking tab is riveted on most lock smiths can just make a new key based on the serial number on the lock....they just look up the key code to cut a new key....my locksmith here charges $12-$15. But since most time I can make the key myself it just costs me the cost of the blank key. Hope this helps..again it just depends what its worth to you time wise and cost.
