This started as a kit I bought on-line from Brian House. It included some laser cut brackets, hardware, and plans. I supplied everything else. Power is a 2 h.p. Baldor 3 phase motor and a VFD running off 230 Volt single phase current.

It's a fairly simple project, the toughest part being getting the square tubing to telescope together.

Very nice! If you don;t mind me asking what did the kit cost? I have a an extra motor with VFD, just thinking.

Very cool! What are your main intentions/uses for it?

Many, if not most, 2" x 72" grinder owners are into knife making. I'm just going to use it as needed in various metalworking projects. The long belt has a bit more time to cool down than a shorter belt, and the 2" width requires less h.p. than a wider belt.

I paid about $350 for the kit as I recall. I could have bought the steel plate for about $175 and cut the parts out with my 2' x 2' CNC plasma table. However, the parts look better being laser cut, and it wasn't worth it to me to save a couple hundred dollars. I probably have about $1,700 in the grinder.

With a 36 grit ceramic belt, the thing is pretty ferocious with the dial turned up.

c7z06 - Very nice build and project! I would love to have one of these.

very nice build!

I 'm hoping to finish my build in the next couple of weeks.
I'm also plan using it for metal project builds, not for knife making.
old-air-performance - nice build as well!

Re: Added a Shroud to Grinder

I threw together a plywood cover for the grinder, which I hope will partially contain the debris and soften the noise a bit. It lifts off in seconds for belt changes, etc.

Motor is a TEFC unit so I don't think it will be affected as long as there is plenty of air circulation around it. It should also provide some protection in case a belt disintegrates.
