 on amber shellac! A nostalgic favorite of mine.

For a significant cash savings (and increased durability) you can instead go with a gallon or two (depending on how much you are covering) of floor grade polyurethane tinted with an amber colorant. Though it would work, I would avoid a water based poly because it does not yellow the wood like oil based poly.

Have 1500 sq ft Yes and i do like the yellowed look. Who would have the tinting agent? At a paint store?

I was really thinking of an amber shellac. Any reasons NOT to use that?

For a ceiling? no, none I can think of other than cost... On a wall, poly would just last longer/more durable...

as to who can tint it, any paint store our you can by gently mixing in maybe a cup of minwax stain per gallon of poly. Just DO NOT shake poly. Gently stir only....

If you want some "ageing" as far as color goes, don't let any color get into the soft grain. Seal the wood first with a simple pre-conditioner." Then you can add some aniline dye to some alcohol and mix that up with your shellac. There are other oil soluble dyes that can be added to sanding sealer. Oil based sanding sealer is one of my favorite overall finishes, but it is not sold in CA anymore.

Gary, some of the finest homes and furniture is all done with shellac with a varnish top coat. No, you wouldn't do this on a boat. The drawback is buying the denatured alcohol to cut the shellac and to clean up brushes. Shellac is a decent alternative to what the environmental nazis are saying is bad, namely oil and solvent based finishes.
