Hello, I am looking to finish around the windows of my garage. The Windows are are in 2x6 walls. Should I take some 1x and frame around or can I just use drywall and giv it that trim-less look? Also I need to replace one of the windows, should I do that be fore or after or doesn't really matter? Thank you

If it were me, I would finish it with 1x(whatever width needed) that will bring it out to be even with the sheetrock. You could always use sheetrock, but I don't care for the 1/4" round or shoe molding that would be used to trim off the edge of sheetrock that touches the window frame. I have to do a similar job around my windows, but I'm only doing a 1x2 since my windows are in 2x4's.

If you use drywall use the plastic edge strip against the window, it will give a better appearance and be easier to mud the edges. I would frame with 1x3 or 4 and then use molding on the inside around the window. Should be some insulation in there such as the "greatstuff for windows.

For the sides and top, a straight cut on drywall and a steady hand with a caulk gun is all you need. I wouldn't use drywall for the sill. That should be wood or stone.

Drywall corners damage easily around windows like that, I would use 1" material to make extension jams. If you are finishing the interior walls I would go with PVC, will match the white vinyl well.

When I was done with my garage/living space addition I had a lot of 1x1 inch pieces of hemlock left over that were over 6 feet long. When it came to the garage windows I bought a sheet of AC ply board and ripped it to width. I used the strips of hemlock to finish the edge. I did have to shim more than usual but it was cheap and it's holding up well.

I bought some 1X red oak and planed it down to half an inch thick. The I ripped it to the right size and installed it. Worked out quite well. I will take a picture tomorrow if I think about it and post it so you can see what I mean.

Turned out very nice.

I'd use plastic trim if you don't use cedar. Will give you maintenance free solution.

For the window that needs replaced, do it now while you have rough framing.

I just used some 1x and framed all around the opening inside. 45 degree corners and let the 1x hang over the edge of my OSB walls slightly. Then used 1/4 round to bridge the gap. See here, the pic was mainly to show the bars, but you can see the trim work. Just painted the 1x, no fancy stain. My garage is for working.
