Just can't get a search to work for "OSB" so forgive me if its been covered.

So I had my new garage lined with OSB rather than sheetrock. Now I would like to texture/paint it. The "slick" side is facing in. I heard that it takes a different kind of primer than used on sheetrock? Can I finish the seams with tape and mud like sheetrock or how should I handle that?

I've seen threads on here where guys taped the seams and added some spackling compound to their primer then rolled it on!

Oil base primer seems to be the way to go. Caulk works for the seams and is way faster than tape & bed. I'd be afraind the water in the bedding compound would fray the OSB surface.

I did my shop walls about 9-10 years ago with 7/16 OSB. I just butted the edges together tight and nailed it down. Seams don't show that badly. I recall sanding a few that stuck up a bit and I may have caulked a few wide gaps. Overall though, everything laid together pretty tight.
For painting, I used an oil based primer/sealer, did two coats of that and then 2 coats of oil based semi gloss white paint.
A friend of mine had a Wagner power roller which we used. That worked great as the OSB really sucked up the paint! I want to say 4-5 gallons of primer and 4-5 gallons of paint for approximately 175lf of wall about 8 feet high.
Overall, I'm very happy with how it looks and works in my shop.
I did scrape up one photo to share.

I just finished mine. I have smooth side out and then over the joints I cut 1 1/4'' strip of thin plywood and air nailed them over the joints and then painted.Looks great.

If I had any gaps, I caulked them. I rolled on oil based Kilz primer. I think spending a little bit more on a good oil based primer for OSB is worth it.

Have you had any issues with flaking, peeling? Were you painting on the shiny side?
