mine are at least 5 feet. way to much junk down a 3 feet, I'd never see them. They are a couple of medium size ones. If I can't put the fire out with them I have insurance.

I was fishing in Alaska a few years ago when our oil stove ran away around 11pm. It's storming with winds a steady 45mph and gusts to 70. I was the second one to the fire. I went through 2 extinguishers before I could get to the one that was by the stove.

In my 1 car garage, I keep 2 10 pounders next to the door(1 on each side) 1 10 pound in the back of the garage. 1 10 pound near the kitchen door going towards the garage, and another 10 pounder next to my bbq which I keep outside next to the garage. And if all else fails I keep 2.5 pounders in each car. At work I have a 2.5 botled to my sevice cart, 1 5 pounder bolted to my CMan roller. In addition to the 10 pounders provided by the shop on every other I-beam. All of my personal ones are rated ABC.

I've got so many extinguishers in the home garage, one would think I'm paranoid.
Got an extinguisher box outside the man door, 3 inside the two car lower garage area, 3 upstairs in the wood shop (all ten pounders) plus an Ansul R-102 remote system with a hood in the welding area because I was given a free system. In 30 years as a vollunteer fire fighter, I've seen some bad things and I really want to keep my stuff.

What's the reason?

Please notice that MOST people will hang a fire extinguisher at **EYE LEVEL**

Then they would have to lift that heavy thing over shoulder height to get it off the wall.

This violates the Code as well as common sense.

Also
Make it easy to get to and
do not put things in front of it
blocking it in

I assume so you can easily lift the thing. Mine were mounted at around 36" and it is the perfect height for me to lift off the hook with minimal effort.

I just looked up the codes:
6.1.3.8.1 Fire extinguishers having a gross weight not exceeding 40 lb (18.14 kg) shall be installed so that the top of the fire extinguisher is not more than 5 ft (1.53 m) above the floor. 6.1.3.8.2 Fire extinguishers having a gross weight greater than 40 lb (18.14 kg) (except wheeled types) shall be installed so that the top of the fire extinguisher is not more than 3.5 ft (1.07 m) above the floor." And don't forget one other proviso: You must maintain a clearance of at least 4 inches (102 mm) between the bottom of the extinguisher and the floor.

BTW. if you want to find and support the local fire extinguisher guy just look at the inspection tags on fire extinguishers at a local business and it will usually have the business name and phone number.

This is the back door to my garage and these are my main fire extinguishers. Working from top to bottom, Step 1 is to call 911. Step 2 is to grab the top extinguisher and start spraying while yelling "FIRE" at the top of my lungs. Step 3 is to tell who ever heard me yelling fire to grab the bottom extinguisher and help out. So far I haven't had to put my plan to the test. I also have a 4 lb. extinguisher over my main work bench and one 4 lb'r. on each of my mig and o/a welder stands
