My place is about 960 sq ft and will be primarily metal and wood working. Car parking in inclement weather only. I will install 2-3 fire extinguishers in the place. Any suggestions on type, size and source?

In my 30X50 shop I have 6 ABC extinguishers ranging from 5-10lb each. There is quite a risk of fire for me due to welding, cutting, etc. plus it doesn't help that there are many flameable chemicals stored in cabinets far away from where the fire risks...... But things can happen and its best to be prepared than watching your investment go up in flames.

At least one extinguisher at each exit and others as needed at high risk areas. Do most welding and cutting early in the day, this allows unseen sources of fire to show themselves before closing down at end of day. Many fires occur at night because of this, when no one is around to see them.

One at each location you will be doing hot work...or attached to your welding cart. One at each exit. I'd suggest 20# abc's at the exits (if you have more than one exit, 10's would probably be sufficient) & 10# abc's at the equipment. I had an extra 5# ext that I mounted to my welding cart. I caught a plastic milk crate on fire and grabbed the 5# ext. It was spent in seconds...and the crate was still flaming.

The one at the hot work area is for buying you time till you can get a bigger extinguisher. The bigger extinguisher at the exit is to make sure you can get out to call 911...

When you find the need for one you will want the biggest one possible...protect your investments.

A 5lb'er maybe a little too small and the 20 could be too big. The issue isn't the size of the extinguisher, it's knowing how to use it and not panicking during it's time for use.

I'd suggest you stop by an local extinguisher supply, talk to a sales rep and inquire about buying some refurbed units to save yourself some money. You might also be able to locate an older water extinguisher and use that depending onthe circumstances.

I suggest that you place them near the exit. If the fire is too big, continue exiting the building and call 911. If you believe you can handle the situation, grab your extinguisher and return to the fire. When in doubt, get out and stay out.

definitely a water can, you can recharge it with a water hose and compressed air, next a CO2 extinguisher because ABC are messy to clean up and then a 10lb ABC
