Here is the letter I sent to George:

George,
I received a copy of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” this year for Christmas. Two of the main themes of this book are the search for the definition of “quality” and the value of embracing the process, not just the end product. This made me think quite a bit about the quality and process of building our two barns. It is almost impossible to universally define quality, but one can certainly recognize it when it is presented.
And what is good, Phædrus,
And what is not good...
Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?

The quality of the buildings is immediately apparent and has been commented on by everyone who has visited us since completion (and even during the build process). The additional details that are not immediately recognized deepen this quality experience; the drip edge, soffit details, and hand rails are perfect examples. Wanting to be conscientious stewards of our property that dates back to at least 1790, we are thrilled by the durability, construction and design of our Geobarn—all signs of the quality we had hoped for.
Although our overall experience with the build is very positive, our experience with the concrete work done prior to your arrival was not very encouraging. My wife and I were disappointed with the quality of work and dealing with the contractor in general. At this point in the building process we felt conflicted and grew more concerned. Our mood quickly changed as we got to know John, Ryan and later Dan. What a transformation! Here were craftsman who obviously enjoyed their work and took pride in creating a beautiful product. We were both excited to take part in the build process and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, even if we sometimes doubted our abilities as carpenters. When we were not able to be home, the daily updates allowed us to continue to feel a part of the build and were enjoyed by all whom we shared them with. We also valued the time spent with you and the crew and took great pleasure in our spirited discussions.
Although we expected to have quality buildings and to enjoy working in our completed barns, we did not necessarily realize how pleasurable the process would be. We had what could be considered a Zen experience with the Art of Barn Construction.

Thank you,
onemoretry

So I know it has been awhile since I have updated. Sorry about that, but now that it is me doing all the work, it is going much slower...
The barn has been fantastic, and is already filled with junk as all good garages should be. I have added outside dry hydrants to each building and electric is done. I will post the garage pictures here, and of course, the barn pictures will go in the other link.

Wife's $12 garage chair, for the true purpose of all good garages, late night hillbilly music and cheap beer...

Sorry it has been awhile since I have updated. I have been busy, on finishing the upstairs of the garage and travel for work. Here are some of the pictures of the upstairs. The ceiling isn't done yet but I have one more day with insulation before I can do that. When it is done, just trim work and I can finally say done (at least on this building).
I will update the barn when I get to this point too. I am making headway, but it takes a long time when I am gone a lot and only work a couple of hours per day. Bad back, wife's bad back, work travel, excuses, excuses.

The rest of the insulation is done. I am a little worried I will run out of wood, but I think I can get at least the garage and upstairs of the barn done. I did find that while moving wood around to prep for the next step that ants had gotten in. Thousands of ants. I vacuumed them up, but there was already a decent amount of damage done to the wood in the stack.
I got all that I saw and am headed to HD to get some ant traps, any other thoughts?

That's odd...ants found and invaded the INSIDE of my Geobarn within a year after it was built. I freaked out. Have you found any of them inside?

I bought some poison at Home Depot that they supposedly will eat and take back to the nest to kill the queen. I also bought some potent stuff online that is a powder, and I bought a special bulb sprayer to apply it. Gets up into tiny cracks and whatnot...looks like smoke. Wear a mask and gloves when you use it. I know it works because I blasted on seam of my wall, and immediately heard a rustling from inside. Then, dying ants started pouring out of it and onto the floor. Victory! I'll see if I can find the name.

Thanks for the headsup. All of the ants were inside. I vacuumed up several pounds, covered them in killer, sprayed the shop, and spread powder all around the outside. We shall see. I got everything as basic stuff from HD.

I am going with hemlock to save some money

What did you use on the outside - It looks like you used some sort of clear stain?

Sorry it took so long to respond...
We used blown in cellulose. Seems fine, but I don't know if I could tell a difference after install.

Sorry I haven't updated in awhile. I have stained both buildings. It really looks great. The pictures obviously don't do it justice, but they really do look great in light.

1/4 maple in the garage, still looking for a deal for the barn. I'll likely go with a heavier duty in the barn.
