Fire Pit suggestions

A little off the garage topic but I am sure quite a few of you out there like to relax by a fire pit during the spring - fall months. I am buying a new house next week and all it has is a concrete patio. Looking for fire pit suggestions. I had built one last summer at my current house but may go a different route. Post up your photos so I can get some ideas! Thanks

Here is what I am working with [emoji16]

Both my SIL have the 18” Solo Stove Bonfire model. They like them a great deal. When the fire is out, store it in its bag

Some things to consider.
Are you in a HOA?
What are the local ordinances pertaining to fire pits?
What type of fuel are you going to use?

Right now I currently use an old tractor rim. Eventually I plan on putting some kind of stone around the rim to dress it up. But then I am out in a very rural area with no regulations on fires.

I designed this setup and a local welder and I now produce and resell them locally. Really helps funnel the smoke away from the crew sitting around the fire

You’re gonna put it on that pad? Too close for my comfort. My fires hot ash would easily hit those roofs.
Consider a propane one? Neighbors have one day it runs a long time on a tank

I guess it would depend what type but if it was a wood burning no it wouldnt go on the patio. Photo was just to show what the backyard looks like currently. I would take it further out.

There is an HOA but no rules against fire pits. Local ordinances is it has to be covered (when not attended). Typically I have always had a wood burning fire pit.

To me nothing makes a better fire pit than a old crusher cone or liner.

Cone liners do make excellent fire pits. Of course it helps to know someone in the aggregate processing industry to have access to one. Here are two of them I have at my place. The two in the pics are sitting on rolls shells but most people just bury them in the ground about half way. Very heavy castings so you don't just carry them out back without a lot of help.

Here is another fire cauldron I made for a friend out of an old cast pot. He loves that the fire is higher up and you can stand around it and have a few beers and stay warm. He calls it his cowboy cauldron. It folds up to store inside when not needed. Ed.

Our area (Houston) the rule is open flame at least 10 feet from structure. I have a home depot $75 round pit that I put on casters so it can be rolled in the garage or around to the back covered patio when not in use. We put it in the middle of the driveway when we use it, and it's not a permanent thing to deal with.

Wow, I really like that! I have a sheetmetal one that sits on the ground, and the shifting winds blow smoke alternatively into everyone's faces. Something like that would make me more inclined to use mine more often.

Mine is a propane model from HD. 20 gallon bottle lasts a long time. Has cover for when not in use. Wood burning is verboten where I live by the Hoa.

Different versions of this are sold for under $200 at Lowes, RK, Menards,... I like it because it's bigger, mobile, has a foot rest and the "cooking rack" works as a swing out table.

I gotta say I like this chimney one as well.

We have the round Home Depot dish version that sits on a stand and sometimes the low smoke is too much.

OP, I agree with you that the concrete pad is too close for the pit. However if you place one further back you will be in what looks like the drainage ditch behind the properties or on a slope which is not conducive to sitting

How is it these don’t melt after a few fires??? Wouldn’t think it would be strong enough metal

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This tub has pretty thick metal, 18 guage or .049.
Now it isn't going to last forever, I put it in storage after "pit" season, but considering how cheap they are to acquire.

I've been using this one for about 4 years now.

My parents, like many others in our rural area, use a tractor rim.

We get calls for open burning all the time, some good, some bad.

As a general rule of thumb, what we go by, (granted your AHJ will be different) applies to everybody.

* A fire ring made of metal or masonry, 2-3 feet in diameter or 3' square.
* Clean dry firewood, no lumber, PT wood, old furniture, plywood, particle board (Sauder
furniture)
* No yard waste
* Must be 25' from any structure.
* Need to have a water source nearby. . . . bucket of water or hose
* Must have an adult present at all time
* Leave the gasoline, diesel, used motor oil elsewhere
* Flames no higher than 2' out of the ring
* When you're done for the evening, extinguish the fire

Like I said, your AHJ will be different but if you try to follow those guidelines, I doubt you will have any problems.

One last thing, be on good terms with your neighbors. 90% of our calls originate due to neighbors calling because they don't get along and are trying to get each other in trouble.

I really like this idea... The hole pattern makes for an interesting aesthetic, and you are reusing something. Where are you getting the drums from? Junk yards? Used appliance stores? Metal scrap yards? I'd rather not pick up an unwanted machine and have to strip/junk it just for the drum.

Very heavy castings so you don't just carry them out back without a lot of help.

Aw they're not that bad. Had mine in a temporary spot for this winter beings that I haven't got my Shome to the point where I can live in it. Was plowing snow and found it and threw it around like it was nothing. Helps when you are plowing with a 950 though!

All these posts about fire pits are making this winter seem longer and longer!

The one in the picture I got from my MIL when she purchased a new washer.
Friends and family are the best source, especially if they're going to throw them out.
We hsd a front load washer, and it's not a viable source because of the use of plastic in the drum. Some top loads use a lot of plastic in them too.
The older top loads with an all steel drum are the ones to look for.

I like the swing out cooking grate/cover idea of that firepit. I plan to build one before this coming fall and I think I will sink a section of pipe closed on one end to support a similar kind of swing out grate. I'll probably make a cap/plug for it to keep it clear of dirt/weeds when not in use. Glad I clicked on this thread.

I have a solo stove bonfire that was mentioned earlier, I use it on my deck.
It burns really hot and doesn't make much smoke, pretty nice.

Our pit is made of rocks we collected on different camping trips. Each one probably has a story but I can't remember them.

Here is out pit and a burn barrel I made...

No problem...

If anyone thinks I said that as smart *** comment...

I did not...

I think many still aren't aware of how much they can find searching, and especially for stuff like this many many ideas in Images.

And ya, ideas here is great also.

Both.
