Fire rated door question

Hey guys , I'm in the process of building my 2 car attached right now . The side that attaches to the living space has to be fire rated according to my inspector and I understand the importance of it .

Going to do 5/8 rock on the wall .

My question is in regards to the entry door , right now my door has glass in it and my inspector wants a steel fire rated door in its place .

Do I have to buy a pre hung door to have a so called " fire rated " or can I hang a rated door in the existing jam.

It would be less expensive and a lot less work to swap just the door .
But will it still be considered fire rated then ?

Do yourself a favor and double that ! Two layers a 1/2" drywall is the typical code for garage walls that connect to a home. Also that is floor to roof decking !

I don't know if the first layer is required to have tape and mud (I would guess yes. with at least one coat of mud). I would also stagger all joints.

Ask the inspector. I would guess, yes.

Firer rating is generally for the full assembly of the door and jamb. I would say yes as well you will need to replace total assembly to meet the code..

Are you sure one layer of 5/8 isn't enough ? I was told that 5/8 has a 60 min rating. And I know that's minimum code .
