I live in Ocean county NJ. My building inspector wants me to use Fire retardant insulation on the inside of my shop. Has anyone had to do this? I've checked the local home stores and they don't carry it, where can I get it and what's the cost?

There isn't much to chose from. The blue jean batts has a fire retardant in it. I've tested some, it doesn't burn well! Also there is Roxul a mineral wool batt. It really shouldn't matter what insulation you use, the code will require a 15 minute thermal barrier (drywall) over the exposed insulation. I've never heard of a requirement for a fire retardant insulation except in specific areas.

Have not built a commercial shop, but have built commercial office space and houses. The insulation contractors used "FSK" insulation in areas where the insulation is not covered by sheet rock. The FSK is a flame spread material - in some cases it was a metal foil-like covering with with woven strings in it and in another cases it was a white product also with strings in it. When this is used, no kraft paper facing was used.

FSK stands for Foil Scrim Kraft. This does not indicate the smoke/flame propagation.

Suggest that the OP request clarification from the Building Inspector as to the particular code reference he is applying in this situation.
