Fireplace Log Sets

Anyone have experience with fireplace log sets?

I have an unknown age log set in my fireplace and I just removed it.......in order to shop for a newer updated unit.

It never worked 100% and I really like the newer versions with the remote and flame adjust controls

I have:
-Natural Gas
-Fully functional vented chimney with working flue

The old metal grate was 24" long

The fireplace dimension are:
22" tall opening
33" wide
17" deep
26" back(wall)

I have changed two fireplaces from wood burning to natural gas logs. No problems with either.

It's all about looks ..... I have a set of vented in my office. The vented are the most realistic ... I don't use it all that often .. but when I do I want it to look as real as possible. We have other wood burning fireplaces that we use .... but in my office I may only be there for a couple of hours and I don't want to deal with the lit fire.

The unvented or the blue flame have no relation to a fireplace IMO ..... I like a fire w/logs and fire screen .... It's all about what you want the look to be

Does anyone have a log set with the remote control?

Judy wondering how well they work compared to a traditional turn knob pilot light?

Also need to figure out a BTU I need. Is that based on the house size or the room size?

If you want it for heat --- that's whole different matter (what do you use to heat the house?)

The unvented are limited as they contaminate the house ..... the vented -- well they vent so not as efficient as what you use for the house.


The remote work like a furnace -- spark and gas valve vs pilot. My office is a pilot -- since it's vented I have to go and open the vent anyway -- so opening the vent and turning the knob is no big deal.

I added a complete gas log set and it's OK. I say OK because it's just for looks and does very little for heat. It's a vented fireplace and gas and an outlet were already there. Wife likes it on in the winter and gas is cheap compared to grumpy wife.
We added the remote start so just push a button and it lights. Funny thing is our fireplace is ugly and I'm actually thinking of tearing the whole thing out and putting in a free standing gas unit.

You may have had a a ventless .... Personally it is not something I would ever use. And a vented fireplace is not going to be as efficient as the house furnace for a given output.

I would pass on ventless, they **** IME. We tried to use ours without venting and gave up...way too much condensation is given off. So we tried using it vented. Worked for a while, now it constantly cuts itself off when the oxygen sensor detects low oxygen, which is BS.

Even with the damper open, running a vented or ventless will heat up the surrounding brick and give off heat that way.

I upgraded my vented gas logs to a nicer set 3 years ago. We asked about the remote control kit. The sales rep said he was happy to see us the remote kit if we really wanted it but that we'd be calling him in 6 months trying to get it repaired.

He said they had gone through several brands and none of them had proven very reliable. Possibly they've improved over the past 3 years.

Had a ventless set in a previous home that was there when we moved in. Hated it because it would make a hissing noise and would occasionally smell like unburnt NG. I never had a fake log set before, but I suspected this was not good. Had a plumber cap the NG line then tossed that log set in the trash. Replaced it with a decent Quadrafire wood stove.

Get ceramic, they put out heat....Peterson is the brand I bought 18 years ago.

Had ventless ceramic logs with remote in my previous home.

Heated up a large room very well and logs/fire looked pretty authentic. I can’t remember the brand but were a little pricey. Cheaper logs we looked at looked fake.

Odd smell initially. Probably burning paint or log coating.

Remote worked fine. It did however go through batteries pretty quickly on the log remote starter. Probably due to the heat.

Also, logs weren’t very efficient. Used a lot of gas, but usually had it set fairly high.
