Fireplace surround - what is this material?

Hello everyone,

I built a new home and I purposely had the in-wall gas fireplace built without a standard builder-grade mantle. I want to build a stone veneer front wall for the fireplace, yet the thickness of the stone wall won't fit well/flush with the front of the fireplace, since the fireplace is currently flush with the wall.

I'm looking for surround ideas, and I found a picture online of what I can only describe as a curb-looking edge? It also looks like crown molding, in a way. Does anyone know what this is called, and where I could find it? Picture attached, although the picture seems to have a double version; I would do just a single.

Google “Eldorado stone” go to their website and look at fireplace surround. They have an almost exact image surround as you posted.

It's a manufactured stone product -- every spec McMansion built around me in the last 20 years has one. Don't think makes an elegant fireplace.

The firebox itself looks like a Heat-N-Glo Grand 50. Direct Vent gas fireplace.

I redid my fireplace with nor stone veneer rock. It sticks out about 3/4” from the fireplace. I don’t think it looks bad. Most fireplaces with stone are that way, inset

Really hard to tell from the picture, but it could be natural stone. Looks like a little too much variation to be Indiana Bedford, which is by far the most common and blemish free stone for stuff like this. My stone supplier has 3-4 standard FP surrounds like this that they make and stock, and can build most anything that can be imagined with CNC capabilities.

As a mason, I would make a suggestion before you get started: Look at and consider natural thin veneer (NTV) stone before deciding on the material. It's costs a little more, and can be a little harder to work with, but it looks 10X better than most cultured stone when done well.

As a mason contractor myself I agree with this 100%. I have installed a lot of both products and there is no comparisons between the two

Cultured stone just doesn’t look natural to me..

From the look of it I am guessing that is precast stone

I used Eldorado Stone on my new house fireplace. Gas insert with cement board flush to insert. There is a tile support piece that is added at the top of the fireplace that holds the stone. I screwed metal lathe pieces over the metal of the fireplace insert. Used thinset to adhere the stone. Grouted the edge of the stone where it meets the fireplace. I think it looks great and very real.

I'm not inherently against fake. There are some fine products, Azek being one when used correctly. Using fake close up -- especially inside ... can be problematic IMO --- easy to tell and the look is "dated" within a short period.

Hello guys! Hope you had a great thanksgiving.

Thanks for the suggestions, as I now have new stuff to google and compare prices on. I've already purchased some thin veneer stone for the wall (black with some light sparkle to it). The idea is to make it floor to ceiling, I just don't know how to integrate it. So many options now - whether to do just a center piece along the centerline of the fireplace, or do the whole wall, or integrate some cabinetry into it, etc. I also recently saw a "flipped" version where the fireplace stood out some, but it was plain drywall. The left and right "inset" areas of the wall was covered in stone and had lighting.

All of the above options, with some type of fireplace surround.
